kite size for queensland cairs july/august

Postby kiter4fun123 » Mon Mar 18, 2019 8:56 pm

Hello!

I'll spend a couple of weeks in northern Queensland this summer.
Mostly family, tourism, snorkeling/diving but I see it's one of the worlds best area 4 kitesurfing :D
So I've checked the wind statistics on windfinder and from what I can see it's pretty windy in
july / august (https://www.windfinder.com/windstatisti ... ngton_reef)

However, statistics are one thing and reality another.

I'm around 67kg. I'll bring a 134x41 TT board but I'm unsure about what kite size.
I would only like to bring one kite to keep luggage reasonably light.
I've a 12m / 9m - foil kites (roughly equivalent to 15-11m / 11m - 8m tubes).

Any advice on wind, equipment, spots around Cairns, kite excursion with schools
or Australian kiteforums are very appreciated ;)

cheers

cooktown and north is where the maui like wind starts

stay in port douglas, cairns sucks

cooktown andnorth is starting to be serious 4wd equipped/ prepared

port douglas is still good wind and nice little town.. comes and goes 4 day cycles sometimes .. 12m 10m and 8m days.. more 10m

its a fun spot but its brown water, not like southern queensland, no waves too

the kite spot is at southern end of port douglas beach about 5km away , so if you can book something there u can walk, or stay in town and drive each day

no ikuranji or box jelly fish that time of year, there are crocs but no one has been eaten for a very long time, still gotta be sensible away from main spots

enjoy the barrier reef

Thanx, 9m then and trying to avoid crocs.
So arn't the spots close to cairns any good?
I see on windfinder that close to cairns ther're 3-4 spots:

like...
Holloways beach
Yorkeys knob
Palm Cove

Are people kitesurfing at these spots?

Cheers

Yes you will find kiters there.

Yorkies is ok down the beach at the estuary. Super fun cable park there too if skunked for wind.

Port Douglas is just a nicer place IMO, for kiting too, but you will have fun at both. I guess my point is that Cairns city itself is surrounded by a giant mudflat but those spots 20km/30km out with beaches are not too bad if you are staying in cairns.

It is a pretty interesting area, enjoy.
