Questions about Greece - Rhodes - Kalavarda

Postby Chris30 » Fri May 24, 2019 7:50 pm

Hi!

I will be travelling to Kalavarda for about 2,5 weeks from end of August to September (plan rigtht now is 24.8. - 10.9.) this year. I have a few questions about spot - village - region. Hopefully some of you know something about Kalavarda to help...
- First: is there an ATM in Kalavarda?
- how big is the shallow water area? In the net you can find different writings about that (from 5 - 30+ meters)
- I think boardshorts and lycra is enough!? Or should I take a shorty with me?
- what are the conditions in that time of year? I mean real experiences not statistics based on forecast…
I have Flysurfer Speed 4 in 10 & 18 sqm and Spleene Rip39 & Session45 boards. Shall I leave anything of that at home? Luggage is only a problem in handling travel to/from airport by train.
- is it usually a bit more or less than wind forecast? Or very reliable like forecast?
- is the water usually flat, very choppy, anything between?

Only for people been there this year… how are the prices for food and drinks in Rhodes?

Anything else?

Thx a lot in advance
Chris

Hi Chris,
I 've been to Rhodes but not to Kalavarda.

If you check for ATMs online, you'll see that there are a few nearby (<5klm away) - http://tiny.cc/qz1w7y

End of August it will be nice and hot, I would go for the shortie just to be nicely warm though ;)
As for the wind, you 'll definitely need the 10m2 and the Rip39. I would take the 18 and -if there's space- the 2nd board.

As for the forecast -not sure about the specific spot- but in general windguru is pretty good all around Greece (apart from thermals/sea breeze that will be a few knots stronger than shown).

In Kremasti & Theologos it was a bit choppy, I guess Kalavarda will be as well.

There are these guys you could contact https://kiteandsurfrhodes.com/en/kitesu ... kalavarda/

hope I helped a bit ;)

Hi!

Thanks für the additional infos!
It simply didn't came to my mind that Google could also show ATMs. The 5 km can I go by bicycle if necessary.
After your comments I'll take all my stuff. I fly with Eurowings and in the fee for the sport/surf luggage is 32kg included. So no problem on this.
For the temps... I think most probably my neoprene stuff stays home... Will decide later

Cheers
Chris

Hey Chris,

i'ver been many times in Kalavarda, at lasts this June ;-).

-in Kalavarda there is no ATM but in FANES.
- the shallow area is very short about 5 meters.
- shorty and lycra is okay, but you also have days in Sept. were i prefer a shorty :-)
- the Meltemi wind normaly is still good at the beginning of Sept., an it is still more than the forcast at Windfinder about 5-7 Kn more.
- the water in Kalavarda is a bit choppy normaly, but you also could have little waves, it's like iliana wrote, the same in Theologos and Fanes.
- Speed 18 and 10 is perfect, in the morning about 10-11 you will be with your 18 the first on the water ;-)

if you need more information about the Spot or the Station in Kalavarda check www.kite-kalavarda.com or (Kite Kalavarda on FB), also you can contact the guys from www.ola-sportreisen.de, the Station in Kalavarda is from OLA.

maybe i'am also in the beginning of Sept. back in Kalavarda.

Greets

Michael

Hi Michael,

thanks a lot for the top up on the infos.
Did you travel with OLA or on your own? I prefer to organize travel by my own and so I don't get their transport service...
How are the experiences with taxi drivers? Do they transport a boardbag without discussions? Or should I pre book transport via internet? I think the pre booking driving services are quite a bit more expensive than a normal taxi.
But let aside the price... the most important concern is: will they transport the bag?

Little update:

After quite a bit of research I found a transporation/ taxi service offering the tour for 30,- euros one way.
If interested I'll let you know how experience was after my holidays.

Right the wind forecasts are not as I would have expected after reading so much about Rhodes in July/August... But if it's really mostly 5-7 knots more than windfinder it's ok. With my 10m Speed 4 I'm very happy with winds in the 18-25 (gusts) knot range...

Check where Dimitry M. Is going, I think he'll be over in August.

Smaller kite as a backup is a must.

Hi folks!

Thanks again to all of you!
Kalavarda was great. On the water every day Most times with my 10m Speed 4, some days in the low wind time (around noon 'til maybe 2:00 or 2:30 pm) good sessions with my 18m - in that case mostly very well powered :thumb:
A 12 or 15m would have been nice then...
Water is chop and waves at the same time. A little weird and sometimes exhausting but nice :D
Cheap accomodation and meals. Four guys being stuffed with food and including two carafes (each half litre) of wine, one or two beer, three to four Ouzo for 50,- to 53,- Euros. Perfect

Super kite station with chilling atmosphere and very nice people - staff and (most) guests.

To mexer: nice to have you met there! I think we all had a great time :mosh:

Cheers
Chris
