Kite "Camp" in July in Dominican

I’m a beginner (I’ve taken a couple of lessons) on vacations in Puerto Rico and BVI but would say I’m still a beginner. I have a week off this July and I’ve convinced a buddy of mine to go with me specifically to learn to Kite Surf. Ive never been to DR, but I’ve read that Cabarete is the kite surfing meca down there. Have also read that Las Terrenas is also a good spot. Looking for recommendation for where to go for the best instruction and rental equipment. Ideally we would sign up for a package or a camp with equipment included.

Thanks for your help.

Cabarete is definitely the place you want to be in July. Its windy every day from 9:30 am to sunset so you will progress fast. Its also a very busy time of the year especially from mid July to end of August so its best to reserve ahead of time, flights and hotels are almost fully booked for certain dates.

Let me know if ever you come to Cabarete. Our Kite & Surf School also offer SUP packages. Holiday rentals, VIP service, airport transfer www.saltyaddict.com

cheers !

cabarete is the most popular choice in the DR..
but as mentioned before...it DOES get overcrowded on kitebeach..and it is not really fun to worry about other gremmies dropping kites on your face while trying to waterstart.

las terrenas is pretty...and an it home to maybe my fav french bakery on the island... but kitesurfing is "discouraged" except for a couple spots.

if you have the time...and appetite for adventure in a 3rd world country.. google "Kiteboarding Buen Hombre"
there you will find the best wind and problably kitesurfing conditions on the island.
excellent for progressing...is more of a "camp"... and is never crowded since it is a drive to get there.

also..
in cabarete the thermal winds start hitting around 12..reaching the peak at 2pm.
930a is mostly the light sea breeze.. maybe you'll see 1-2 foilers on the water

all that said..
PERSONALLY...while i love cabarete..
my #1 spot that i recommend for progressing is always long bay in turks y caicos islands.
(if you had the option/funds..i'd go there to learn to kitesurf)

huge bay...plenty of room....not deep water (unlike cabarete)...and doesnt have the 3rd world poverty/problems
lots a good folks there too(ie everyone there not just trying to separate you from $$)

+1. Turks & Caicos (Long Bay, Providenciales) is a far better location for a beginner than Cabarete. As noted, Cabarete has deep water and is very crowded, neither of which is great for a beginner. Try to find a shallow water destination with consistent winds and good kite schools (like Turks & Caicos). Then, when you are a competent, self-sufficient kiter who can handle the deep water and crowded waters, plan your trip to Cabarete. :thumb:

I learned in Cabarete so it is definitely possible, but as others are saying it isn't the ideal place to learn. I wouldn't say don't go, but there might be better alternatives until you have reached a slightly higher level.
