Nz is best explored in a van if you can. travel everywhere.. it isn't that big despite the huge amount of coastline.
I'm sure NZ is beautiful - would love to visit one day ... but travelling around in a van to go kitesurfing isn't quite the same thing as being in a major city that has easy access to great kitesurfing.

It all depends what you are looking for. My recommendation of Lisbon is based on the unique culture & history & the wealth of sites/sights in & close to the city ... all that combined with a world class surf spot at Guincho that is only (traffic permitting) a 30 minute drive from Lisbon's core. If your primary goal is great kitesurfing, & cultural ambience is less significant, then there are many other options.
When are the best months at Lisbon? I only foil. Thanks

I'm not an expert - better to get more detailed info from some local kiter, but in general, the windiest months are June, July, August when they have a very particular thermal. But if you're foiling, I'm not sure you would want the windiest months. In fact, I'm not sure I would recommend Guincho for foiling. It can be very windy, choppy on the outside & the wave area is relatively small with lots of activity. The shoulder months might offer more moderate wind conditions.

Guincho is a remarkably wild, picturesque spot for being so close to a major city. Further up the coast in the Peniche area (about an hour & a half from Lisbon), the wind is more moderate & there is much more space. Go a little further & you can give foiling at Nazare a try! :thumb:

In lisbon you also have a very good spot for foil.
South of lisbon 20 min drive.
Fonte da Telha near costa da caparica in Almada.
You can do big distances with no problem, water is not so cold if you dont mind using a 2mm suit its enough at this time of year.
Wind is normally side, sideon ranging from 10kts to 16 kts depending on day.
From now till august wind is coming everyday like a seabreeze.
Search for "Windspirit" club wich is a kitecenter in fonte da telha.

That would be Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington.

Portugal rules, v chilled out for europe, waters way colder than I thought it would be though in summer.

I agree, Jericoacoara is not much of a city, very small. Also the cities in the west coast of Ceara ( Itarema, Guajiru, Paracuru, Icarai, etc) and in the coast of Piaui ( Barra Grande,Luis Correa) dont amount to much citywise. But they provide the basic needs in infrastructure and a few very nice restaurants. Now , when it comes to kiting it is paradise, from July through January you can count on every single day with wind above 20 knots, sideshore, warm water and almost no dangerous creatures in the water. You can do downwinders of 500 km , most of the time with a car following you at the beach. At the low season, wind is milder, from 10/20 knots. This year, the worst in the last ten( it rained a record amount) i would say that at Prea you could kite 80% of the days if you use bigger kites or foilboards.Temperature varies from 28/32 Celsius year round.so, if you dont care for shopping malls and much city attractions, Prea and in general, Ceara and Piaui in Brazil are top spots.

That’s why Cumbuco is the best of all.
Big city 30 min away with everything you need.
But living in a little village away from big city stress.
New president Bolsonaro is stepping up his game and security is getting better every day. Improved already a lot.
8 months of wind almost daily with 15-25 knots.
4 months with about 30-40% 12-20 knots.
Shorts only, Best climate I have ever met.
Brasil...magic all the way.

Guess why I live here.

As there appears to be many more of the infamous cariocas around rio than near fortazela...
...I am completely stumped.
