Cheap place to kite Dec, Jan, Feb (Maui alternative)

Postby mikewang » Wed Aug 28, 2019 9:24 pm

Hey guys

I usually go to Maui to kite. Amazing place for sports: Kite, surf, SUP, spearfishing, diving, cycling, etc.

I probably can't afford to go there this year. I'm looking for some place cheaper.

I see a lot of places listed in the "wind by month" thread, however, Nothing seems close to Maui...

Any suggestions?

Western Australia, while not as cheap as The Philippines, better surf and flat water, everyday wind. Hire a camper van and head north.

From Toronto, I'd think Dominican or Cuba is closest/cheapest.
I had a short fun visit to Tobago a couple years ago (Pigeon Point).
La Ventana in Baja.

Kayak, Expedia etc. are currently showing flights from Toronto to Cape Town, South Africa for C$734 - C$850 depending on airline. Long flight (some of them change in London UK) but not crazy expensive.

United Airlines have started flying direct to Cape Town from New York ... may be worth checking that one out if you want a more direct route.

When you get there, Cape Town will be about 25-33% of the price of the equivalent holiday in Hawaii .... car rental $20/day; yummy burger out for C$6.50; beers for 60-75 cents.

Our accommodation rates will also be a fraction of those in Hawaii. PM if you need further details.

Here is a nice guide to Cape Town:

Best wishes + good winds

South Padre Island. Although it is not a sporting hub like Maui it is cheap and you will have plenty of wind during those months. If you foil too then you may only take a day off now and then to rest.

if coming from toronto it will be hard to beat cuba (or really anywhere in el caribe if $$ is less a concern)
the tradewinds start really kicking in around christmas...and generally the further south you go...the less those constant winds get interrupted by storms coming from great white north.

personally i'd tell you to try maui in a summer(too). (you dont get the same swell on north shores...but wind is much more kicking...and consistent imo)

You got direct flights from Toronto to Puerto Plata if I remember correctly?

Definitely not expensive. Never been to Cuba, but in Cabarete you can find very decent places for very little money. And if you are on a budget the restaurants away from the beach is usually very cheap.

You can have lunch at Gorditos for around CAD10.

Wind might be so so, but I guess that would be the case for Cuba as well.

Costa Rica might be better for wind?
