Bahamas - where and when?

Postby WindJunkieFL » Tue Jan 28, 2020 3:53 pm

I'm planning my next kite trip. I live in FL so like visiting areas in my general neck of the woods (I just got back from a kite trip in PR).

Is the Bahamas any good in terms of wind, flat water and sandy? If so, where and when? I'd like to avoid the need for a boat to get me to a spot. Ideally, I'm looking for a location where I can kite outside of my hotel/BnB.

Thanks

Winter generally is best bet for bahamian wind but its not guaranteed. Some days/weeks howl, others are calm. Sandy and shallow - very easy to find in Bahamas.
The smaller and more remote the island the better in my book and there are lots to choose from in Bahamas. Getting to them can get expensive though. Eleuthera or Exuma are classic kite trips with regular flights to them from FL.. Tiny or skinny islands are awesome because its a very short drive/walk to the best wind direction no matter which way it blows.
Bear in mind the northern bahamas are in the throws of an extreme hurricane recovery effort.
Middle and southern Bahamas unaffected.

Yeah what Green Turtle said above is right on... I've been to Exuma about ten times and have been skunked twice out of those trips. Once was this past December and the other was in April, which is on the edge of the good wind season. I used to bring a 9m with me but have stopped since I have only used it once and isn't worth the extra weight. I bring a 14 and 11 now and that has always covered me for the winds that I have seen there. If you go the Exuma route there are easily accessible beaches for the wind directions that you'll see there. I've even kited on the bone fishing flat side a couple of times which would allow for westerlies, but wind out of the west is pretty rare. The directions I have mostly seen are between east and north. You'll need a car to get around the island but it's pretty painless to rent a car there at the airport. If you want to rent a boat PM I can send you a contact that will rent you a boat so you can get out to Moriah Harbour, which is a great place to spend a day and probably the best place to kite on the island.

Check out Makers Air for flights from Fort Lauderdale Executive airport to the more far flung bahamian destinations, they hit a bunch of the out islands regularly that silver and bahamasair don’t go to from FL, or at all.

Thanks...will do!

Also, noticed you're from Erie. I was born there and moved to FL when I was in grade school back in the mid 90's. I go back to North Springfield (just west of Presque Isle) every summer because my family has a small fishing cottage on the lake. I've kited Presque Isle once, it was a blast. I usually don't bring my gear but the one year I did I was able to catch some light winds on a 16m and a big board.

Heya, checkout https://kitesurf.ripatrip.com/

We just launched and think we have the most comprehensive search for kite travel. You can input Caribbean & North America to find something close, and then there's 10+ other filters to narrow it down to your perfect spot!

Bahamas can be good but it's definitely a light wind spot. The ABC islands, Cabarete, and other spots definitely get stronger wind.

Cheers
