grand cayman spots

Postby Wingyam » Fri Feb 14, 2020 6:17 pm

Hi,
I am planning to visit Grand Cayman in 2 weeks and looking for informations on the different spots. From what I understand the three main options are : Barker beach, East End and Rum point. Any major difference between the 3 options in term of water/wind conditions? If we are big fans of flat water what would be the best choice.

Thanks a lot!

I was there Feb 2-9 and rode at Barkers and the East End ... Colliers Beach.
It's pretty much all flat/chop, the island is surrounded by a reef.
We stayed in the West Bay about 1/2 mile from Barkers.
Rode Barkers most days with ENE to NE winds. Barkers would not work with any S component.
Rode the East End 1 day with SSE/SE winds. East End should work with anything without a W component.
I'm not sure how common west winds are.
Did not ride Rum Point so can't comment on that.
Getting from our location (near Barkers) to the East End was an hour drive.
Only saw one other kiter out there that day and it was a solid 20 all day.
There were always kiters at Barkers if there was wind. Cayman Kitesurf is there.
The launch at Barkers is a little small but not an issue, East End is more open.

I think any of the three would be just fine for your needs assuming the wind direction works.
We chose to stay in in the West Bay area because of the proximity to kiting, restaurants, grocery stores, 7-mile beach etc.
I would do the same the next time.
Both Rum Point and the East End are more removed with less around them. I'd be fine with that my not my wife.
I'd guess the East End would have worked for wind any of the days we kited.

No live wind meters anywhere but the windguru forcast seemed pretty accurate.

PS: I am not an expert on the area, just what I know from being there last week.
