Greek mainland + Evia spots, June

Postby BernieTomic1 » Sun Jan 10, 2021 10:07 pm

I am thinking of going to one or more greek mainland spots in the mid of june, driving from Athens airport.
I have never been around the greek mainland, but am aware of some spots, like Drepano, Tsimari, Raches, Pefki on northern Evia and Marmari on southern Evia.
Some of these spots seem to be a bit off grid, where it could get a bit slow traveling alone?
Where would the wind be the best? I believe that Raches might have daily thermal at the end of june?
I am thinking of combining the kiting with some biking (MTB or road, good rental shop would be perfect), so an area with good cycling roads and maybe some possible climbs would be a plus.
Hoping for good ideas.

Maybe it would also be an idea to go to one of the islands? I know Rhodos and Paros.
Could Naxos be the place to go to kite and bike? The Meltemi might not be there yet in june, so there might be little wind?

For June its better to stay in mainland.
The meltemi for the islands dont come until end of july..

Raches is beautiful place and its thermal winds with a flat spot. Just bring your big kites cause most days are lower than 20 knots.

If you like to ride powered up you could go to drepano and tsimari. They are 1 hour drive apart. There is also nafpaktos which is very good spot but not flat water.
Nafpaktos has some good nightlife and beautiful village.
I would go and stay around nafpaktos area and hit drepano/nafpaktos/tsimari spots on different days.
The normal wind for those is west.
If there is days with eastern wind only drepano will work.

Rhodos and paros and naxos are great for mid july/august when the meltemi (north) wind is up.

Also marmari is a meltemi spot. And also very very gusty.

Also, traveling alone is OK. Greece is pretty safe, i dont think you will encounter any problems.
We have many people traveling alone around with no problems.

Naxos has reliable winds often already in June and the biking is great. Plenty of hiking trails, although many of them are too technical to be ridden on a MTB, even for advanced riders. But many other options, small roads, dirt paths etc. The island is not as touristy as many other ones so even in summer, it does not feel crowded (especially not in June..). check out www.naxostrails.gr for the MTB part.
Enjoy!

I think the part northern of Drepano is an undiscovered diamond...this flats look just perfect!

But, I am not sure about winds...anyone knows if there is a period in summer to get like 20-25 knots?

Tsimari or Dioni is the name.
It is actually perfect.
It is like almost a secret spot with not many tourists.
3-4 years ago you could kite almost alone.. now its starting to get more busy but still not much.

If the thermals are up its gonna have wind.
The normal is thermal with 18-22 knots in the evening after 15:00-16:00oclock until 21:00 at night.

The good days the wind picks up sooner at around 13:00-14:00 and builds up towards the 25-28knot range at the evening.. and stops at late night.

In May and June until mid July, i could say that maybe can kite around 4-5 times a week... And from those days probably 1-2 with the better wind.

So maybe 3-4 days of 18-20knots and 1-2 day of 25+knots in one week in total.

But the good thing is that the spot is probably the biggest flat i have kited ever.
It has a big lake with some small bushes inside so it is super flat everywhere you go. Also there is a river where you can go into and kite there but only for advanced riders as you can go in and out only with your kite. Riding there is pretty magical, very similar to northern brasil lagoons scenery like the secret spot at ilha de guajiru.

I was one of the riders that didnt likeTsimari the past years.. as i am heavy and thought it didnt have strong winds...
The last 2 seasons i can say that i was wrong.. when thermals are on, the wind is very good very steady and has pretty decent power.

This is the whole spot from a drone with not much wind
In the lagoons its about waist deep water and you can go everywhere you want.

And this is the action edit from Greek riders in Tsimari and Drepano :mosh:
