El Cotillo (Fuerteventura) rental gear/tips?

Postby ?uest » Mon May 31, 2021 7:51 am

Hello,

I'am planning a first time trip to the north of Fuerteventura in june for some surfing and kite waveriding. Will be staying around El cotillo, and renting a car.

I have to decide weither to take my gear or to rent it at location. I can take a board (same for surfing as for kiting) and one or maybe two kites on the plane for 110 euros. I have no idea what the rental cost would be for 7 days, fees for warrant deposit etc., best place to rent near El Cotillo,... Do you guys have any advice or tips on that matter?

If I bring my own gear, what are the prevailing windforces around this periode? Since I can only bring one or max. 2 kitesizes i will have to chose wisely :)

Any other tips on the spots etc,are always welcome!

Thanks!

Hi.

I am not sure about the exact prices of the shops in cotillo, but here are mine: https://www.northshorefuerte.com/rentals

I take a 200 Euro deposit.

For that amount you can hardly rent anything anywhere and you also have your own fine stuff!

Used to be a dirt road across to El Cotillo and you had to have the appropriate car insurance but that was a long time ago. Maybe tarmac nowadays but might still be tracks to some of the bays back towards Corralejo or down along the west coast. Probably a red herring but worth checking on to make sure if you hire a car or jeep.

Hi Gunnar,

Seems affordable! Can you swap the gear any time (kitesizes, board, ...)? Do you have reo's?

PS. What's the average wind force in june?

I use the same board for both kiting and surfing too. I usually ride a kite 1m smaller than most since my boards have a tad more volume.

That said, for Fuerte in June go with a 6/7 and 8/9. It get's windy. If you need something larger, may as well just surf or crack a beer until the wind inevitably picks up.

Plus the two smaller kites should fit into your surfboard travel bag.

first of all, thx for great info on Fuerteventura @gmb13 , I just did my research here at the forum and your posts on wind directions & spots at Fuerte are gold.

One unanswered question though: I've read somewhere that kiting in cotillo's lagoons (Toston Farol lagoon I mean, unless there are some more that I'm unaware of) is prohibited in touristic season. What does touristic season means there in Fuerte? mid-June - mid Sept like in Tarifa or yet sth else?

thx in adv

High Season is Christmas, Easter and Summer (July -Sept). It actually is prohibited in the Cotillo lagoons all the time, however it is not policed. But in the high season there are a lot of campers and people swimming there, so if someone gets pissed and calls the cops, then there can be issues.
