I haven't been to Diani, but I have friends who have. From what they tell me it is quite comparable in terms of wind to Zanzibar (I got one friend who went to Zanzibar the year I was there and Diani the year after - even if the wind isn't always the same from year to year of course). If so it is fairly light. Zanzibar was amazing when the wind was good, but most days it was somewhere around 15 knots.

exactly, that's what I've read.... you know, if it was trip to Portugal or Canaries, where I can buy one-way tickets, and then, depending if I like it or not return home sooner, then fine. But going to the end of the world (+ having return ticket on fixed date) and having mainly kiting as a plan and then not being able to enjoy it.... naaaah, I'd skip it. Going with GF there, kiting when possible etc would be great, but I'm single currently so I'd give it up.

btw can someone tell me - approx of course - what are the wind statistics in Bluberg / CT vs. Langebaan (the 'windier' beach) late Dec / January?

like:
CT:
16knots or less : 20%
17 to 25knts : 40%
26knts - 35knots : 20%
35knts+ : 20%
(thresholds are randomly given, feel free to use yours)
16-17 knots is minimum for me (especially with wave, which, AFAIK is big in CT)

Langebaan:
..............

please don't link me to windfinder or others like that aggregated stats, which are usually crap and only measure top gust of a day or other meaningless value like that

or else - is windguru forecast ( GFS 13 / 27 data) reliable for these? (for some places in the world it works perfectly, like Ireland or Cape Verde, for many others not so much) then I could just check wg archives

What happened that you can't go to Brazil?

potentially life threatening illness of family member. Which was also sort - of the case during my last kiting trip: one of my uncles died, my grandmother died + my 66 yrs father broke his leg (no bullshit, srsly) during my 4 weeks stay in Viana DC in June / July . So when sth similar started happening just couple days before my departure to Brasil, I cancelled with no regrets..... well, with some regrets. But f*** it, next year.

Others would know a lot better than me. When I was in Langebaan I randomly had a friend staying in CT. Those weeks the wind seemed quite comparable when we exchanged info about the day, but I believe CT is generally slightly stronger?

Langebaan is less gusty though. Never really had much gust there and some days it was extremely stable and smooth.

Riding is quite different. Langebaan is choppy and flat depending on where you ride. CT obviously you got waves.

By the way I love that area. Two areas all kiters that can should visit is CT and Brazil. There might be other areas as good, but they can't be much better. Loved the seafood and wine in CT. A shame with the crime which does mean you got to be a bit aware of things and CT has some of the same annoying traits like you find in NA where everything is made for cars, but other than that it is a lovely lovely place. Met so many great people as well. A bit similar to Brazil. Just very friendly.

As I go to Cape Town each winter except the last, I encourage you to try it. Blouberg has a lot more to offer than Langebaan, especially downwinders. And if you are based in Blouberg then it is relatively easy to go to Witsands, or Cape Point, or Muisenberg, or Hermanus, so a lot more diversity. Langebaan can be visited for a day trip, 1.5 hours each way.

btw is kiting in CT really as difficult as some ppl say?
I only go on twinTip, had great time & no problems in Cape Verde / Sal, but here & there I read that CT is extreme and even good riders struggle there ? that true ? + danger of being hit by someone flying down from his 25M+ jump & kiteloop.

if that's the case then maybe I'll skip that, and will only go to Cape Verde Feb / March. Which is shithole & not much to do there, but kiting in Feb 2021 was excellent. what you say ?

Is Fuerteventura not on the list? I'd pick it over El Medano if kiting is the #1 prio.

Sri Lanka? You are done kiteing for the day when Europe comes to office. Perhaps not the umpf you are looking for though. But excellent timing, can't have both. HaHa. RE Fuerte don't go to Sotavento as Toby also points out. Check for the "secret" flatwater spots on the northern part of Fuerte.
