St Martin Caribbean in May

Postby michaelb1 » Wed Mar 09, 2022 10:50 pm

Has anyone kited at St Martin in May? I will be there all month and I am curious about typical conditions.
My biggest kite is a 12m. Will I need a bigger kite?

Are there decent shops to teach wing foiling?

Not a very safe place my friend got car jacked there they left with his car and all belongings. The police told him this happens all the time they don't come for this sort of things so he had to walk to the police station with no money and nothing left on him. The kiting spot is small and super crowded.

What's your usual setup and conditions?
How much do you weigh? Do your ride a surfboard or foil?

I kited in St. Maarten and think it's a great place. Sure there can be some petty crime, but if you stay in Orient Bay you are walking distance to the kite spot and the rest you take a taxi.

I prefer waves and freeride. I weight 190lbs/86kg. I prefer to ride a surfboard but for this trip I might just bring my TT's. i don't foil but I'd like to try it.
I'm replacing my older quiver before this trip. I will have a 9m,12m, and 14 or 15m.
My usual ride location is OuterBanks NC, USA.

Think that would work....I'd bring the 12 and 15.
Or maybe check if there is a kite shop on island you can rent stuff from and save yourself the hassle bringing gear.

Island wise I always like St. Maarten and don't really get the 'unsafe' comment...different experience I guess.

I live on the next Island over (BVI) and the wind here is not as good as in St. Maarten.
My setup 75% of the time is a strapless surfboard and 14...

@nherbold: for foilkiting would you recommend orient bay or the big lagoon (b52 kiteschool)?

Can't help you there as I don't foil and only kited Orient Bay...and that was more than 10 years ago so maybe a local or shop has better info.

Enjoy!

Curious... Where was your friend? Dutch Sint Maarten or French Saint Martin? Also, I've been to Orient Bay and didn't find it crowded. Just curious more than anything about where and when the carjacking took place. Thanks.
