Cape Town/Table View/Kite beach "dune/beachfront rehab" project?

Postby macguffin » Thu Sep 22, 2022 1:44 pm

Hi all!

Does anyone have any up to date info about the "dune/beachfront rehabilitation" project which seems to have already started at Dolphin Beach, Kite Beach and Bloubergstrand...?

As far as I have seen in some Instagram stories, the whole beach, starting at the Dolphin Beach Hotel parking lot, all the way up to KFC/Kite Beach, has waist-high fences on it, to keep the sand which has been moved around in place. As far as I can tell, the parking lots along the beachfront are also about to be redone, the whole thing is scheduled to last for 18 to 24 months... :duh:

Anyone who can comment on that...?

Thanks in advance!

I was planning to come back for a long stay, but now I am in real doubt. I would also like to know if someone has more up to date info and how much space is left for launching and landing.

Google Map Satelitt Images on the ipad app seems to be more updated than the web-app and give an indication.

Still kiteable, maybe a little tight at high tide for launching in places.

City has met with the local kiters and some amendments will be done shortly - to give a bit more rig up space in the busy areas.

Cheers

Thanks DK, planing to come out for another three-month season and was disappointed to see what they had done in some pics from a friend. A good winter storm is likely to remove most of what they appear to have done. I mostly do downwinders past kite beach, but wonder what this will mean for the KOTA.

Great to hear you will be back this Summer mate.

These beach improvements won't effect your standard mission I'm sure.

City and RB/KOTA also in close discussion, I'm sure it will be fine. Personally I'd love to see KOTA back at Big Bay, such a better viewing experience, might lack landing space for the new school moves tho.

Cheers

@decay: Seems like you are a CPT local. Could you maybe add a few more pictures? To be honest, the webcam footage above looks even worse than all the pictures of the fences I've seen before. :(

If the whole beach looks like this, all the way from Dolphin to KFC, and potentially the northwestern part beyond KFC as well, I don't really see how this is not impacting kitesurfers...? (unless you're not launching from/landing at any beach covered with fences ) As far as the project documentation says, the whole beachfront all the way up to Big Bay will ultimately be included, and what happens if they start digging up the parking lots to change them around?

That's obviously a worst case scenario, but regarding KotA, as far as I've heard, the agreement with the construction company consist of a designated (small) launch/land area, and "spectators will be allowed to sit in between the fences"... :-?

In the end, KotA only is three day event, I'd rather care how the three months from November to January go as a whole. If the accommodating nature of the Table View city board and the construction company manifests itself by simply keeping kitesurfing allowed while the whole reconstruction project keeps moving ahead, I wonder how this is going to turn out...

PS: I am also quite surprised that there is such little talk about this. Maybe/hopefully it's going to be much less bad as it seems atm, but at least people should know about this to be able to ask questions before they book their trips etc.

The topic does not get the attention I expected either. Maybe change the title or create a new topic in the "Kitesurfing" forum?
Would this be a better title?
"Access to Kitebeach in Cape Town is restricted due to rehabilitation"

It certainly looks like there is no space to launch from kfc to dolphin on the webcam.
Are these fences downwind like that as well from kfc to doodles?
I’m sure once lots of people start to turn up there will be more talk but from what I see on webcam it looks a mess.
Not sure why they need fences so close to water 🤷‍♂️

Following this thread as i'm going to CPT first time this year.
Hopefully the authorities will find a solution that would "please" both the rehabilitation and the kitesurfing scene soon, since people are probably starting to come to Blouberg from early November.
Pretty sure most kitesurfers are going to come to Blouberg even with those fences in place and their usually tourism won't get very impacted, but it's going to be a pain for everybody and hopefully no accidents will happen due to those objects on the beach.
