Progreso or Cancun- which one is better for kiting?

Postby matt_81a » Mon Oct 10, 2022 5:08 am

What is better for kiting in Mexico? Progreso or Cancun?
We want tokite, twintip, foil and wingfoil ;)
Have you been there? Any opinions?

Thanks,

Matt

I haven't been yet, but will be in the Progreso area in about a month, and staying for up to 6 months. The online research I've done shows that in the Yucatan, the most reliable windy location is the northern coast from Sisal to El Cuyo/Holbox. This includes Progreso. Cancun is likely to be a lot less reliably windy and milder, esp at this time of year. The windy season for Yucatan is supposedly Feb-May, but Progreso is pretty much kite-able year round depending on the equipment you have. The only downside to Progreso is that there isn't much wave action since it's not facing open ocean. From YouTube videos, it looks like the waves improve greatly further out east at El Cuyo.

For foiling, you may have to walk out quite a ways in Progreso. It's waist deep for as far as 100 yards. Hoping I'm able to find nearby locations that get deeper a little closer in than that.
