Depower rope WTF

Ok they're different brands, but that "depower rope" is only as thick as pigtails or leader lines.

No wonder it snapped after less than 100 hours, half of them foiling.

Cabrinha depower rope is way thicker compared to what you show. Look at picture of my Cabrinha bar (24m lines are Best) used for 11 weeks of kite trips in 2017-2018, and notice thickness of depower line compared to lines and pigtails.

In your picture the thin line might be the quick release line, and these are never as thick as depower lines

A few friends have had their pvc cover lines break too.. Cabrinha included..

Should be Clear tubing so it can be seen - for preventive Safety.

Imagine it breaking in the worst possible situation because it had only 2 strands left - that you can't see.

Back to the Drawing board I think..

I've grown to prefer traditional bars with no PU tubing for several reason. One, I like being able to see the condition of the center line, when it shows any significant signs or wear I will change it asap. Two, I find the PU tubing to stiff and cumbersome, especially in cold weather. Three I like knowing I can cut any of my lines easily in a bad situation. Four, and this one really pisses me off, flag lines that go through the PU tube still get hung up, and can be a bitch to reset.

The thick line that goes through the cleat for trim is lark's headed onto the depower lines just above the cleat -- you'll see it's actually two loops there, as the depower line is the long thin one that runs down the PU tube and around the top half of the spinning head and back. Supposed to be 650kg breaking load, so it should be enough but crikey, it doesn't *look* enough!

Went to the local shop to borrow tools and expertise, and it seems there's a bit of an epidemic of it going on here...

My theory is the line stretched and pulled the cleat away from the PU tube, exposing the end of the depower line to the cleat metal, and it worried the square cut (!) tail bury on the splitter inside the cleat, and basically cut it there. Guy in the shop thought that the two lines were moving against each, creating friction and melting the lines, so the other guys have had lines snap internally, away from hard corners. One of the 2018 bars we pulled apart had a long splice of the depower line, so that'd stop it moving.

BTW my 2011 Cabrinha bars are still going strong

old depower line was 6mm (1/4 inch), about 4,000 kg strength (about 4 tons), newer depower line is 5mm (3/16th inch), about 2,400kg strength (about 2 tons). Leader lines are somewhere around 3mm (1/8th inch) about 1,000kg strength, about 1 ton. Leader line thickness depower is perfectly strong enough to handle the kiteboarding loads and the only reason we don't use lines that thin is because you would be changing them out every other week from wear. as long as they are new 3mm should be strong enough. But who wants to be replacing the depower lines all the time, give me the thick ones.

Yeah these are maybe 3mm, if not 2.5. Fairly annoying job of pulling everything to bit to replace them too, it's not like the Flysurfer etc where you can replace a depower line in a couple of minutes, without tools or needing to splice anything.

And yeah but how much more do the thinner lines elongate or creep than the thicker ones?

The problem with tubes like Cabrinha lies in fact that they put the ropes way too loose in the tube. That way they can move and sand gathers inside the tube resulting in invisible wear.

If the rope sit tight with both ends sealed the tube wears down while the line inside stays like new.

A very simple design flaw, and sadly not the only one in their bars that is a result of the big double bore tube. Jamming safety line and breaking power line at the power bracket stopper are a direct result of the choice using this big tube with a low power bracket.
