The short version is:

If you dont jump nor race or ride extremely powered in light wind, it does not make sense to buy new lines for a bar with same thickness/strength as for your TT/Waveboard bars, would be stupid as I see it.

Line lengths are different anyways (in marginal winds) meaning not the same bars used.

So best guess on how much lower in strength will give the best "match" for similar overhead, is the simple question ?

If our normal frontlines are 270 kg, and rearlines often the same for simplicity, so 270 / 270 kg, my best guess for lightwind hydrofoil linesets would be:

170 kg is sufficient, and for the rears 100 kg lines could be used, still having some margin.

Just my guess, but interesting to hear others experiences and knowledge

One comment about cutting fingers : when i was setting the bridles of my custom single skin, holding the (Very thin) lines by hands very close to the speed system to have a direct look, one little gust came and line sliped from my hand. I bleeded a little due to the thin diameter that has penetrated more easily that standard line diameter. So be carreful even if indeed breaking load will be lower : thin line is more "Agressive". That is also why my 2 first meters from the bar are standard line (In addition to accept more wear during loops ).

To bounce on Peter's request I also think there is a huge margin between standard diameter and the real need in hydrofoil freeride light wind, on all lines. My current configuration for marginal wind , hydrofoil and 60 kg, is 70 kg on rear line and 130 kg on front lines. I never have to pull on arms higher than my own weight so that give already 50 % margin if no vilolent crash !

No line break but few sessions with them for now.

Flysurfer will provide 0.7mm lines if nicely asked for;)

As I see it, the problem with that thickness are the line ends. I hate the FS solution, hence have a custom ones with thick ends just like any pigtail.

Evan, that's what I'm interested in. How do you guys make the line ends?

D.

Thought you only needed unfinished lines.

Can do anything from a short 12cm "race" stitched splice to my own developed combination of a Dyneema sleeved splice that I keep at 50cm on the kite end of the line to avoid bending stresses, prevent knots and make walking the last part of the lines as tangle free as possible.

Should be enough pictures on my fb page, can make better ones when I am back from the hfpt montpellier.

Are there any real benefits in using thinner lines? and if so can it be quantified?

Nope, it cant (be quantified - I can not at least)

But you can ride in less wind, and have a more direct feel even with really long lines, so thats the deal, no matter how small the difference is.
I am not to say if I can feel it or not, but one day I CAN say, when I have made a bar with thinner lines and comparing on the same day, if I can feel it or not...

Somewhat just like a lighter board and foil feels and works SO much better in every way, a huge difference.
It can not be quantified either (apart from the weight diff) - but really easy to feel a major difference when riding, in every aspect :D

Also, even our normal thick and strong rear lines at least, seems "stupid" for hydrofoiling, if less than half is more than sufficient, especially as it is two different bars anyways and you need new lines for hydrofoiling in marginal winds, so why not choose what is more spot on meaning thinner but still good overhead :naughty:
