How to crash advice

Postby galewarning » Sat Jun 09, 2018 4:06 pm

Thought I'd ask for advice on crashing. I know, just don't crash is best advice, but things happen.
Seriously, about all I've learned is to try and make the board nose-in [front foot pressure] while falling and keeping the kite high...

1, keep the kite flying
2, fall away from the board
3, after you crash, body drag away from the board for a few second, as its likely to follow you
4, when you fall, and kite is dropped if you have truble with quick relaunch, try to recover the board before it gets to your lines...
(I swim for it, when appropriate)

this is my basic 1.0
cheers

I like to push the board nose down and to the side. I then use my kite to pull me in the opposite direction.

When hitting the water it is much less painless if you penetrate the water with one foot first. I basically lounge forward and use my front foot to break the water's surface tension.

Somewhere on this forum there is a thread and video on how to fall.

One tip I got in beginning was to try to push down with front foot. Another thing I do is try to keep front foot on board as I'm falling, this ensures board is down in water.

Keep both hands on the bar, if you dont, you might start some very painful damage to your shoulder of the arm you use to "break your fall" into the water, also this helps you maintain control of the kite.
Try to rotate round so you land more on your back, less painful and you can keep an eye on the kite.
wear an impact vest.
at all costs avoid the worst sort of crash, the jack knife, where the mast and wings fold up towards your body, if this starts to happen you only have a split second to jump as hard as you can forward to avoid falling onto the wings, but to learn this you need it to happen to you to realise the mess it can get you in, and to learn how it happened and how to lessen to risk of injury and tangled lines around the wings and mast.
Apart from the jack knife crash all the other crashes are far less scary.

Kite high, bar sheeted in, dangle gently away from the foil and board. Best to bail early rather than late.

Biggest risks are riding down wind slack lines and trying to edge against the foil like a twin tip.

It helps to set the bar to just a touch of backstall so pulling the bar all the way brings the kite deeper back into the window.

It's hard to explain. When i started foiling the board would hunt me down and smack into me. Now, whenever I crash it doesn't. I think I have learned to master the art of a toe flick and dive as I exit the foil. Sends the foil in one direction while i go in the other.
I really don't know how to explain it.
