2019 Slingshot Material

Postby marioparacuru » Sat Jul 07, 2018 9:17 pm

2019 slingshot already available.

They say in the website terms as "bomb proof surf tough construction" (sst kite) which is very common nowadays among the manufacturers. But looks like the canopy material it's the same... The same as always to be honest. This way they're one of the only major brands (the only one?) to keep it.

I'm wondering how a bomb proof construction doesn't use the double or quadruple ripstop reinforced materials, available on the market.

What's your opinion about??
Is slingshot becoming out of hand?

Because extra ripstop doesn't make the material stronger. It's all HTPE. If I'm not mistaken there are about 20-24 threads in 1 ripstop area. Well, lets make it 24-fold ripstop then! Ow wait, no ripstop anymore you say? Just heavier...?

Coating plays a big role, but it's essentially all some type of PU/Silicone coating. Don't expect the differences to be too big, especially when your kite gets older.

If you want more durable, you have to look at new materials. Like HMWPE (dyneema) cloth. I expect that to happen someday, when it gets cheaper.

I also heard that Slingshot will have some surprises in the future btw...

If you notice the SST lost its “Wave” scent two years ago. People want lighter, faster foil kites and SST have been taking place of 2012 Rallys in that sense.
They’re pretty strong but they’ll be lighter and lighter as focus shifts to foiling and Clouds are biting away sales of an established brand.

Out of hand? No, they’re trying to stay ahead, par or catch up with the market demands and trends.

They have some amazing products, and in 2019 line you see some really neat stuff:
- safety wingtips on their heavy shot aluminum line wings. I bet someone got their kite of foot penetrated hard to make that happen
- thinner, lighter micro Dwarfcraft
- same great Rally
- same great SST
- finally the new Moses line (windsurf section is in already)

But don’t forget, Slingshot is kind of slow to learn:
- it took years to “invent” bar bungees
- colored lines so much desired by all who ride snow are probably still under R&D
- what the hell is wrong with twintip line, who intheir right mind would buy things like Glide
- for some nostalgic reason the Fuel is still being reincarnated every year. I guess whatever, they were good kites, people who loved them are still alive and riding
- the 2017 foil line with old, scooped from dark corner, Moses race wings was certainly a disaster. It’d be cool to see the presentation marketing did to Tony pushing that madness
- it seems the kitesurfboard offering is pretty wide. Not seeing people actually use these much I wonder how those are bringing profit
- Aluminum foil fuselage and its rear tip certainly need a lipo and face lift to be neat at least as much as Axis aluminum foil. It’s heavy and ugly as is and overbuilt by factor of what, 50x ?

Really, it depends on the area, just a few examples
Ahead:
- Talon
- foil school short masts
- safety foil wingtips
- 3’6” Dwarfcraft and now the micro

Were behind but caught up:
- large inflate valve
- bar bungees :)
- above-the-bar trimmer
- foiling freeride kite. But there’s more to achieve too
- variety of freeride “aluminum line” foil wings

...[Matt’s video]
Slingshot has been leaving ton of space to dealers to explore, make sense and explain to buyers what’s what and why :)

Themselves they had amazingly simple graphics explaining Fuel/RPM/Rally/Turbine purpose and position in the wind window. I hope they get the artist to draw same for foil wings and reduce the confusion.

It took a while to make an order and settle into H3/H5/H2/H4 line as it actually is (still puzzled about H1 and F1/F2 position in that line). With new year, new names, I guess they indicate wingspan in cm but still some guess work left for imagination.

There’s a lot of “nice wing / self centering / stable / etc” descriptions but not enough pictures showing:
1. Layover/side-by-side wing outline comparison (wingspan/AR visualization)
2. Wing profile thickness (Lift/drag impacting)
Am I the only one who thinks simple is beautiful?

With all the respect to Tony’s shaping obsession and leading a company which fuels my adddiction I think all the anhedral, s-curve etc. wing shapes are way less important than area/AR/thickness of the wing.

I think we’re still in ages of playing with those but we’ll settle into several key wings (race/freeride/surf) with couple of sizes for each to accommodate riders’ weight line.

Imagine how silly it would be if each kite model had only one size. Unthinkable, right? Same for foils. Some 240 lbs dudes want to go fast and some 120 lbs lighter folks might like slow wave carving experience.

Does anyone know what is the reason to use different wings for windsurf foiling? I know the windsurf fuselage and wing position is different but if the wing has same AoA why spend all the efforts to produce low number of wings. Why have Gamma 68 and Time Code 68?
Still trying to make sense...:)

As far as canopy material and construction, slingshot has had the right idea for a long time: single ripstop is nice for keeping the kite light, but with tons of panels sewn together (way, way more canopy stiching going every direction than average on brand x), tears are thus contained much better by these seams than any double, triple, quadruple ripstop material can do. So there is an argument to be made there for slingshot.

It has also been suggested by some, that the more ripstops added, can lead to higher porosity after cloth is worn, due to the size difference of the threads making it a less smooth contiguous surface, with tiny pores opening up around the ripstop threads. Not sure on the validity of that, but it kindof makes sense.
