If you want to take the most out of LW days, foil is the best option by miles.

Moving the lawn on big doors and huge kites makes no sense in the foil era. I used to do it, but boring as hell in sub 10kn.

If your spot has shallow water then try a skimboard or a LW directional.

+1 for skim best bang for the buck and fun in light wind and you won't outgrow it like a door. you will still want a foil eventually and not only for light winds. your skim will make you a better foiler a door will do the opposite. Also you may even just bolt on a foil to your skim down the road

There are reasons I’m not selling my 170x50cm Flydoor XL
- riding huge, less than knee deep shallows in LW is not working out on anything else
- direct offshore wind when you have couple of hundred yards of shallows is sketchy with a foil because with a door I can stay close to shore
- I can jump tricks on door pretty much the same way in LW, except not as high
- riding through channels (LW downwinders)
- effing goddamn piece of shit seaweed which catches on the mast and wings. Large fin catches some too but not as much
- strapped door is easier to not pay any attention to compared to strapless pocketbord when kite is falling out of skies if kept static

I love the foil otherwise, just not selling my door yet

Cheapest lightwind combo is a Pansh kite and surfboard. If you don't have waves or they are small, a skim is more fun. Alaias are fun too, but you can do skate style tricks on a skim and jumping is better.

If you decide to go with TT direction, also check Radical Transformer board with dagger center fin.

If you go with foil check fb kiteracing2hand group if suitable 2nd hand foil can be found for your wallet.

Speed 3 21 and flydoor xl save me a lot of times in Angola, but wasn’t the foil era, already exist but unseen

I am a door user for a long time and I have to admit that I like it if other options are failing.

Just to be real: Yesterday the wind died and there were only two foilers out there plowing back and forth while I could do pussy loops , go strapless in the tiny bumps, play around.
haha.. I had different experience yesterday...
I was doing this while none of twintippers could stay upwind and eventually gave up trying after 10 minutes, even with bigger kites (FS 18m mattresses)
I was on 17 Zephyr and GW 545 foil and after 30minutes ended up with a swim when it fell on my head on a lull...
Hell, the zephyr is heavy.. Have I had a foil kite I'd be golden.. Still I was the only one on the water..
Maybe your foilers are not that great ;-)

I’ve been kiting for more than one year now. In my progression, I find the door an awesome tool, and session saver. It allowed me to try my first tricks and little jumps in light wind and total safety.
I never tried an HF, but i’m sure i’ll Keep my door forever. I also enjoy an old airush sector v3 in light winds these days, my first directional board. It allows me to start even earlier in those days (i’m 75kg, riding a 11m rally I can start kiting at 11kn now)

A foil is cheaper than a door and a monster kite.

ll you need to enter the foil market is a foil. Use your current non light wind kites

Cheaper? Most hydrofoils are more expensive than Pansh kites.
