This video made my day, 1 min:28 sec into this video, they show an instrumented kite flying / test rig being towed behind a small van.

Finally ! The ability to test kites empirically instead of by subjective / comparative test riding.

Want to know more about this test rig, particularly if it only can do quasi-static testing ( i.e. kite parked at the edge of the wind window, AoA varied ) or whether it can actively control the kite and gather data during kite maneuvers such as looping.

Can't help but wonder if they still teach in marketing courses the concept of how unattractive being a needy bitch who's trying too hard is.

Back in 1987, Gaastra, Bruce Peterson, Dave Russell, Jeff Magnan,Chuck Stahl and others developed and tested new windsurfing sails with the ADTR test rig, which apparently gave the first indications of the benefit of a loose leach sail and helped Pascal Maka win back the sailing speed record from Crossbow.

Hopefully North's kite new test rig will also make similar contributions to new kite developments !

Saw that but with a human at the controls the steering and sheeting inputs won't be as repeatable as having a machine at the controls.

it doesn't matter, it appears they are measuring the line movement of the rear lines and can view the video of the kite, presumably that chicken loop is attatched to a measuring device

whether is is a human or a robot moving the lines, you can still figure out how the kite is reacting to steering lines sheeting and relative length changes, and it is probabaly a lot more flexible

i wouldn't under estimate humans ability to repeat things, especially if they have some feedback and some practice

i'm guessing on that trailer they can change the angle of attack of the kite and measure force versuse wind speed as well as where the kite sits.
