Kite size for Majorca - June

Postby Beardytello » Fri Jan 25, 2019 2:41 pm

Anyone from Majorca (Mallorca) able to advise on what kind of wind to expect in June?

I was thinking of bringing my 14 / 17m and leaving the 10 at home, sound good?

I'm a loaf so 14m is good for me up to 23kts ish.

Bring the 17 and 10, 14-17 will have more or less the same wind range, if you have a big board(door) the 14 will be perfect for most days. The 10 for the off chance that there is a bit stronger wind (doesn't happen very often however it is possible).
In general expect most days to have 8-12 knots, and if you are lucky some days with 15-20.

Edit: i saw that you use the 14 up to 24 knots, then maybe you may not need a smaller kite...

I would take 14 and 17.
I don’t think you will use the 10 at all...so why bring it?
If a bit stronger you want to be on 14, not 17. While 10 wouldn’t be fun.

A suggestion: kite bags are quite heavy and take up a lot of space so if you don't take them perhaps you could take an extra kite.

Thanks guys,

Yeah, think I'm sold on the 14 and 17.

It's a lot less windy than I wanted really but I have to remind myself its a family holiday with added kiting...not a kiting holiday

Few years ago I spent all the summer sailing in Pollença Bay. Forget small and medium sizes.
You'll be lucky if you get more than 15 knots.

Mallorca has thermal winds most of the time and you could get good winds in June because of the colder seatemps.
I have been there last year for 6 Weeks and could kite 30 of 42 days with a TT and 41 of 42 days with a Foil (I´m 82kg)
On some days for about 1-2 hours Wind (1 pm -2 pm)
On some days the whole day (11 am to 6pm)

Spots:
Pollenca Bay (Beginner / shallow) for NE Winds
Can Pastilla (Advanced / Tourists crowded) SW Winds

Twintip (139cm):

5 Days with a 9m Tubekite
25 Days with a 12m Softkite
30 Days with a Softkite bigger than 12m

Foil:
35 Days with a 9m Tubekite
41 Days with a 12m Softkite

It is not unusual that there will be Wind in Pollenca and in Can Pastilla at the same time although those spots are suitable for different winddirections.

Summer has mainly thermal winds.

Can Pastilla gets almost a daily breeze during summer...but the spot is crowded with swimmer etc...only if you really know what you do. Ask the locals the dos and donts before you get out.

Many locals move to Son Serra in the North during summer for kiting. A beautiful, natural beach with few people.
And for shallow water you go to Pollenca or Alcudia.

All those spots get thermals during summer, but they are not strong...around 10-20 on a good day.

Forget Es Trenc, no kiting there during summer.

Last two years in Pollenca I’ve used the 14m more than anything else. I’m 13st.

Six sessions over two weeks and mostly 14m with the odd day on the 17m. Once on an 11m when there was a storm but that’s rare. I can’t foil but if you can, you can go out everyday on the right setup. Best times are 12.00 to 16.00.

Also go out from in front of the kite/sup shop Pura Vida (lovely lovely people, link below), better angle of attack and you’ll easily get upwind and out of the way of the schools and other riders bunched up in front of the beach. It’s onshore wind most of the time so you need to have a good run to get up wind.

https://www.puravidamallorca.com/en/spo ... -mallorca/

There’s a tiny spot midway around the bay but launch and landing is on a tiny bit of beach where you have to be in the water, bit dodgy.

Don’t go from the old ice house (building on the beach) as it’s busy and harder to get upwind and you end up flying your kite over the road if not careful or continuously walking backwards.

It’s shallow and warm. Once out the back it’s awesome, wind stronger, fewer kiters and loads of space.
