Duotone Daytona - high performance freerace foil

Postby Mossy 757 » Fri Feb 01, 2019 3:12 pm

Courtesy of "Hydrofoil News" on Facebook. Looks like Duotone has come up with an answer to the question, "What if we put a Ghost Whisperer strut on a Mike's Lab glider section?"

“Looks like” mike’s...
Hmmm
In the 80s i remember seeing a pontiac fiero with a “looks like” ferrari testarossa body kit.

Hope they stuck with the high modulus fabrics and left out the carbon confetti this time.

Would be nice to see the CFD results....at least its not made in china...although it seems to refer to the Daytona 500 in the USA?

I know someone who studied very carefully a Mike's Lab hydrofoil (got his hands on one), and got to the conclusion that the profile and design was not very different to 'slower' hydrofoils. The difference was in the stiffness. Duotone has clearly understood that, hence the impractical but very rigid one-piece construction.
If they aren't using high (or ultra-high) modulus carbon they are stupid.

Big words and I don't think so. In my eyes normal carbon is the material to build an affortable freerace foil. Ultra-high, etc. is just for those realy into racing and wants to show of and or pay the price.

The few seen about the concept looks good to me and I will try to shortly test it in the next month, even if it wont be for me, buying a foil completely incompatible to mono would feel like blasphemy

It seems duotone starts to be willing entering the market of serious foil builders, even if they seem still way behind the big ones as ketos, zeeko, etc. But in long term would be nice to have another manufacturer, so hope they do well. :thumb:

There is just one thing:
@duoton(n)e (which in German means "double trash can" )

Couldn't you find some professionals to name your foil products for the future?
I mean appart form the "speedster" which is an ok but slow beginners only foil, I don't seem to be the only with a not too positive feeling about "DAYTONA and NESCAR" stuff, you know

If its fast though everyone will be happy to be the Ricky Bobby of kitesurfing.
I wonder how much less high modulus fiber you can use by making it one piece.
One piece can mean longer, straighter fibers, no joints to flex, possibly better stiffness or same for cheaper price. Also a pain to travel unless small, but race wings usually small enough...
