If you want more racey kite and something to boost on TT in bigger winds get a Soul if you can afford it.

I’d skip the foil kites for learning to foil board.

Foiling isn’t going to be light wind weapon until you’ve got some skills.

IMO you want a size of kite for the conditions that you can body drag upwind with — just.

Good conditions are steady 15 knots....

For freeride as said, take the 71 as much better for learning, and you wont outgrow it in some conditions where needed.

Kites, you dont write anything about your current kites?

The Soul 8 m2 would be just perfect for "most" I think.

It is quite "strong" compared to more race oriented kites, so if you think it is too fragile for your beach, I think you might have another problem regarding "what you want" now, that you have to settle first.

The 71 mast would mostly be used for learning, as soon as I know how to foil I will start using my current mast 101cm.

I thought my gear was visible in my profile, my current gear is:
"Flysurfer speed4 lotus 12m
Flysurfer Sonic fr 18m
Flysurfer Sonic2 15m
North Vegas 11m

Moses Vorace 101cm 2017, groove carbon kiteboard (no short mast yet, thats whats to come)
w590, w558"

Interesting to hear that the soul is somewhat heavy, then maybe the 6m is to consider.

When trying to foil with the 101cm mast my experience is:
I feel like I need the power from the 15m sonic2 to get up on the foil, then its usually too fast, I have too learn to depower and steer it to 11 or 1 to ride slow.

The speed4 lotus 12m is sometimes not enough to get up on the foil, but this is also technique. then its a good kite to keep the speed, but it has sometimes also been too powerful. my best kite to use I think though.

The sonic fr18m have been hard to use, because when its too light wind its not stable enough/too heavy/not even in zenith, and when its more wind it's just a bit too powerful. otherwise im really comfortable with it on a TT.

I think the short mast will help alot to learn, and then I could also get a smaller kite to use in 16konts+ range. Im pretty equipped for lightwind.

Your foil kites are pretty big. The 18 and 15 are not useful for learning to foil.
Learning to foil, take same size kite you would take if you were taking surfboard.
You seem familiar with foil kite flying. If you get a used 9m Ozone R1V2 / Chronos 2 or similar, your have go to kite for 14-16, it will be good for racing. You can find a used one.
Then get a 71cm mast if you want easier learning curve with the 590.
I learned on 550 wing, 93cm mast using north mono kites. It was challenging. Started wanting short mast about 10 hours in when I was faceplanting a lot. I started making one.
By the time I was almost done with it, I had 20-30 more hours foiling and had altitude control. Didn't need the short mast.

If you have deep water, can get off the beach with the 101, are motivated, you can save money and skip the short mast.

Lots of good advice, thanks!

Tom, yes the R1V2 9m is in my mind a great next kite.

I just remebered that shimming the foil is a thing, maybe its possible to make more lift (more front foot weight) to slow the foil down? Is that a good idea to make it more user friendly?

I mean shimming the w590 - s330 for a slower speed, would it be a good way to make it easier to control?

No, it is not. The 590 is not going to go slow as 1000 sq.cm. wing and it will stall at lower speed / high angle of attack. For your weight it’s a decent wing to learn though

True, one can not "shim" any foil towards lower speed.

Control can be changed indeed, but no change in how low you can go :naughty:

The 590 will be quite easy eventhough a bit more speed is needed, but quite stable.
As the really big slow ones are not always easier to learn on it seems, according to many
