Kitesurfing destination with non kiting partner/friends?

Postby Xaxpop » Sun Dec 16, 2018 12:17 am

Hi!

I'm fairly new to the sport but already hooked and try to get out any chance i get.
Me and my girlfriend, perhaps joined by another couple are planning a summer vacation in July (probably just a week) somewhere in Europe or atleast somewhere accessible from nothern Europe where we live.
The problem is where do we go? I'm aware of google and i have tried finding many good kitsuring locations. HOWEVER as i guess many others have had problems with as well my girlfriend and friends don't kitesurf however if i went on a holiday and didn't get to kite i would most likley sulk like a child for the entire week.

So, do you guys have any tips on places that are "normal" holiday places to visit with nice beaches, sunbeds, facilities, a good town/city with decent nightlife where i can also kitesurf? I'm aware this is asking for much but i'm really hoping there are places like this so that i can do some kitesurfing while also having a normal vacation with my girlfriend and friends that they won't hate :).
Placing them on a desolate beach with only kitesurfers as far as the eyes can see will get me killed :(.

Hello.

I learn kitesurfing in corn island Nicaragua. I was on holiday with my wife. There are nice beach with hammocks, bars and restaurants.
Yo can also de snorkel, scuba diving, kayak, massage, yoga...

It is not a kitesurf destination, so it is a nice place for non kiters. It is a small island in the caribbean.

Go to Honolulu. Stay in Waikiki. July is perfect. Those not kiting can laze around the local beaches, get some amazing shopping done or relax by the pool. Those kiting can drive 30 mins to Kailua and enjoy some of the best kiting in the world. Pristine beaches, flat water, waves and a great community. At days end drive back and regroup ready for afternoon drinks and dinner.

Hawaii? Accessible from Northern Europe? For a week? :-?

Well that's 11 time zones, around 38 hours travel time each way with minimum 2 stop overs ... so not really.

Cabarete? Possible, but still a long way to go for a week.

I think I would go with one of the Greek islands - pretty accessible with a fairly short flight & only one hour time change. Undeniably beautiful beaches/scenery/archeology & reliably windy. :thumb:

If you don't have a problem with Germans (almost all speak English, and specially everyone working in a foreign country), you should consider the Robinson Club Soma Bay.
A bit on the pricy side, but well worth it if you value great food and great service.

Lots of activities all day...and SPA/gym program no women would say no to ;-)

The kite spot is nice, flat water, offshore wind with rescue. Only 5 min bus ride (free shuttle) from the club.

I have been several times and can only recommend it. Actually I am planning to go this year again. This should indicate you how good it is ;-)

There are also other hotels in the area, but none is comparable to non kiters activities.

They also have kids clubs if you want to bring your family.

Please let us know for what you decided at the end, since I am sure more people like to get ideas for this.

You should consider El Medano in Tenerife. Very good compromise between kiting and non-kiting.

The kiting isn't amazing and rather crowded but it'll be windy and your GF will be pretty happy.

Portugal could be an option. Various spots on the west coast plus Algarve. Windy season May-Sept. Not 100% Wind guarantee. Highest probability in Guincho close to Lisbon, but that is not a beginner spot. Nova Vaga, Costa Caparica is more beginner friendly. Beautiful beach, lots of beach bars and restaurants. If no wind, go surfing, boogie boarding, SUP. Water is cold, air is warm. Close to Lisbon which has tons of night life.

Portugal is interesting: but it has cold water & the wind at Guincho can make it extremely unpleasant to be on the beach. Also, as Dirk pointed out, definitely not a beginner spot.

I think you need to decide whether your non kiters are more interested in just lying around on a beach & bars/night life, or whether they would also like some "cultural" activities. There are lots of places that have wind + nice beaches + night life. Greece (& Turkey) is one of the few places that offer all those things PLUS places of historical, archaeological interest to visit. Just ask Dimitri ...
