Lift 170 classic/fish feedback?

Postby tmcfarla » Wed Feb 20, 2019 6:59 pm

I really like my lift 110 wingset, and thinking of adding one of the bigger wing sets. Anyone have feedback regarding 170 classic vs 170 fish?

I weight 150 pounds / 70 kg. I usually ride in flat water, and my biggest kite is a 10 tube (Naish boxer). I may do some surf or sup in the future, but mostly kiting. Not really sure what I’m hoping to accomplish with bigger wings- definitely I’d like to get better at foiling transitions, and I guess just something new.

Do the bigger wings offer much advantage in flat water? If so, 170 classic or fish?

In flat water, the bigger wing will allow you to get going with a smaller kite and will also stay on foil at a slower speed (working on transitions, for example). The 170 is a great wing. I have not tried the fish but Lift told me it was designed to flex while being pumped. I don't like the idea of a foil that flexes, so I went with the regular 170.

I'm thinking of the 170 as my first foil.

Anyone try the 150 and the 170 and can give some feed back . I've been riding the 110 for a couple years and love it . I can switch my feet while flying before and after the turn and im looking for something to play in windswell . I'm under 150 lbs and can't chose between the 150 or 170

I've owned and ridden the 150 & 170 classic wings. They are both great and ride very similar. I weigh over 200lbs and found the 170 obviously has a bit more lift at low speeds. Otherwise, they turn and ride similar. At my size, the 170 also seems a bit more resistant to surface breeching. After riding and loving both, I would say that if you weigh Less than 195 lbs go with the 150, if you weigh More than 195 lbs go with the 170. For lighter riders, the 150 should have plenty of lift.

Just got out on the 170 Fish for the first time today. Background; Newbie, as I've been riding the 170 'classic' since I started foiling this past September. I can jibe on both sides, regular or goofy. I cannot switch my feet. Flat waveless water, 9m foil in 8-15mph.

The fish is a very different wing than the 170. The wingtips are curved down more, the foil is much thicker (and heavier), and as others have noted the fuselage is flat towards the tail. It comes up very quick out of the water, but once moving is stable (though not as stable as the 170). I felt I needed to have my back foot further back, but that might have been my inexperience with it. It turns on a dime compared to the 170. Carving turns felt a bit more confident than with the 170, and that was in the first session. At moderate speed, 'pumping' did not feel entirely different than the 170. At very slow speeds it feels nose heavy (could be placement on the board); once the wing is stalled, it falls more dramatically than the 170.

Again, one time on the wing, from a relative newbie. I bought it with the option that I might sell it if it was not good for kiting, but I don't think that will happen. It will add some variety and a challenge, which is what I wanted.

I'm reviving this old thread to see if anyone else has feedback on kiting with the Lift 170 classic vs. Lift 170 fish? I've been riding the Lift 150 for a couple of years now. I love the 150, but I want to slow down a little bit in the waves. From what I've read (including this thread), it looks like the Fish turns better than the Classic, but I'm wondering about durability with the flex tail.

As they don't make the fish anymore, I would suggest the 170Surf. Very similar feel and more stable at speed than the fish.

When I had the fish, there were no issues of durability. I never noticed any flex in the tail, but I never pump.

I have a brand new 170 Fish which I’d sell. Can pair it with brand new 36” mast if you’d like.
PM if interested
