I went with the cheap watch option, bought a Garmin Forerunner 15 on Amazon for like 50 bucks. It's one of the cheaper ones that is waterproof. Used it kiting for 2 years or so and it's still holding up great. Personally I'd rather take an inexpensive watch I don't mind smashing around than a $1000 phone that has my whole life on it, but that's just me.
I have the Forerunner 25, I think. Does the job but it updates its display kind of slow. Thought itd be more instant. Still a decent gadget.
Yeah, I think the 15 is once per second which is very not-realtime.
From what I've read, using gps is pretty battery-intensive, so more frequent gps updates = shorter battery life. The Forerunner 15 only lasts about 5 hours with GPS running, not sure how much better the more expensive ones are.
Personally I use it more for the tracking/distance and elevation gain (mountain biking/hiking), and usually just look afterward at what max speeds and such are.
I'm not sure how I'd see realtime speed, would have to be something mounted on a helmet right in front of my head or something
the watch is too hard to look down at when you're really hauling ass anyway
