Tear repair

Postby soplo » Thu Mar 07, 2019 6:14 am

I have a 2 inch tear with an angle, and have never fixed a foil kite before. Can I just use Tear-Aid Type A to do it?

If it's good enough, I don't care how it looks. I got this used, and don't have a patch kit. It's an Ozone Access from 2013 or so. I also have another Access of about the same age, and I think it has patches (or at least repair fabric). The color is very different, but again, the looks don't matter as much.

Thank you!

No, don't use Tear-Aid. Tear-Aid is for bladder repairs.

Use ripstop sail repair tape. Line up the "checkerboards" so that your kite material assumes the same position as before the damage. Tape both sides of the tear, if possible. Stitch the edges of the tape for repairs to rips longer than 1 inch.

Good luck.

Tear Aid A is good for fabrics too. It will hold that small hole for sure. Just remember to clean the hole area well with alcohol before sticking

Tear Aid is flexible. You really don't want a flexible patch on your kite canopy. It's used for bladder repairs because of its flexibility. Yes, it will patch and hold on a kite canopy, but so will duct tape. Sail tape is designed for ripstop nylon repairs, and that's what a repair shop would use on your kite. It's also less expensive than Tear Aid. Call me a perfectionist if you want, but I recommend doing the repair correctly. :thumb:

Thanks all! Just to be safe, I ordered some ripstop sail tape, and it should get here before I use that kite again, so I'll give that a try. Good to know that Tear-Aid can work in a pinch though. I'm not gonna say I've never used Tear-Aid on LEI material... but just small tears. This one's bigger than I've ever accomplished so far.

Since the tear isn't just a straight line, I'll probably have to overlap the pieces of tape. Hopefully, that's ok
