Duotone Mono 2019

Duotone News:

Mono 2019

mono.png

Introducing the 2019 Duotone MONO; light, simple and devastatingly good. Reinvented from scratch by kite designer Ken Winner, it's a fantastic one-strut all-rounder with incredible handling for entry level, foiling and twintip riding.

The increasing popularity of foiling caused us to fundamentally reevaluate the MONO for 2019, with all sizes undergoing a redesign and the outcome is genius. Now the benchmark in one-strut design, the MONO’s dynamic handling is sure to excite. In light winds the performance is incredible and it comes with auto relaunch. If you want a pure, lightweight do-it-all kite, the MONO is it.

For 2019, the MONO has a radically lower aspect ratio and wider tips than in the past. Therefore the arc of the Leading Edge is flatter giving a higher projected area for every size. The expected benefits are super easy water relaunch, quick, easy turning and great ability to drift and hang in the air. In addition, the MONO;

Sits far back in the wind window
Backstall is nearly impossible
Super easy, fast auto relaunch
Light bar pressure and progressive power development
Light and robust one-strut design
Slip profile with low aspect ratio and less flutter
4 and 5-Line setup

Ha! You beat me to it Toby. I just saw it aswell. They removed the dirt from the design. The big sticker like logo is really ugly in my opinion, should've kept the dirt. They might do it on purpose who knows

Edit: ups that sticker logo was there before, didn't even realize it that well with the dirt on it :D

Nice, how this big vendors "reinvent everything from scratch" every single season. God, what would be possible if they actually built on top of the stuff they learned from previous models instead ;-)

Getting serious, can only comment on the design because of my limited knowledge (also I don't know how older North models looked), but that isn't the best in my opinion. The Duotone-"patch" really messes everything up, doesn't it?

nah, the dirt is still there, it is just a simpler design two small parallelograms. This looks much better.

I think if they would have kept it more subtle and not tried to embed an image in the 'dirt' it would have looked better in the other kites. Although the white on dark (or blue on black for the mono) at least doesn't look like dirt.

I assume it might be to make it harder to counterfeit.

I'd rather see the kite size in that big sticker, at least on one side edit: well, that is what duotone did on this kite. All kites should have a clearly readable number for their size. And I am still a big fan for a red patch on the left wing tip. One of my favorite colorways was the Best kiteboarding Rasta green yellow red scheme. Looked good and obvious which way the kite was pointed after a tumble.

edit: Why not a different color patch on each side? At least some of the 2018 kites had that feature.

Looks like a little more squared off in the wing tip area so more area in the tips which is probably a good thing. Should give it a bit more lift for relaunch and flying low. Might be less power up high though, although the blurb says "low end and especially high end have improved".

This season the whole concept has been questioned and all sizes have been completely redesigned by Ken Winner. Low end and especially high end have significantly been improved
"Significantly improved"... Let's see:

2018:
9m 15 - 30 (∆ 15)
12m 11 - 22 (∆ 11)

2019
9m 16-30 (∆ 14)
11m 14-25 (∆ 11)
13m 11-21 (∆ 10)

huh?

It’s such theory anyway.

The kite I fly was suggested for 10-15 knots.
For me it starts at 15 knots...and is best at 18-25 😂

Yeah Toby but you do Big Air which is a whole different story. You WANT to be overpowered on full purpose to go big. But this logic for sure doesn't apply to Foiling/Freeriding.

I am just annoyed by the whole marketing shit going on like "we reinvented and redesigned the kite from scratch so it MUST be way way better now bla bla" every year. Also, North/Duotone stated so often that the windrange has significantly improved while the numbers always stay the same. Considering how many times they have actually said that for any kite in the range for the past years, all kites now should go from 1to 40 knots, at least according to their marketing ;)

Yes, important point. Nothing to be found on the website. Low weight essential for light winds, where many folks will want this kite for.. (foiling).
I look forward to test it against the other one strutters, especially Ozone Alpha..
