Best pumping foil?

Postby gbrungra » Mon Apr 08, 2019 3:37 am

What is the distance record for foil pumping?

What is the best foil for pumping?

Condition:
0 wind
0 tide
0 current
Rider is towed to 10knots and released.
Winner is the rider who is able to pump the farthest distance before coming down onto the board (off foil). (So not fastest pumping)
To standardize, assume 80 (180lb)

Yes, the test would be boring. I’m not proposing a new sport, just a test to see which foil pumps most efficiently.

A guy pumped a AquaSkipper across the English Channel. So I guess some people don’t get bored by pumping...

This requirement will skew the results, there is no need to go that fast.

I would bet the current record for distance for "normal" foils (not aquaskipper etc) would be the biplane wing that Horue made for this video:

I heard from someone that tried many surf foils that the Delta Surf Foil is the easiest to pump (least effort to pump a given distance).

It's a really big wing, but it's not very thick, so drag is less than the other surf wings which are quite thick. I had also heard it can be trickier to stay on a wave with it because it goes faster than a thick surf foil.

The Horue wings in that video also looks thin compared to a GoFoil or LF impulse

You might actually see pumping competitions, but with a paddle used as well. There already is a SUP paddling type of sprinting. This was with a GoFoil, so not intended for racing, but it took 10 seconds off the SUP paddling World Record for a 200m sprint.

This is Trevor flying back out for the next wave at Noosa.

That's amazing. High aspect, low drag, big surface area. Pretty ballsy and super cool dry start!
Bet you could kite that with a tiny kite.

Signature albatross 210 is what i’d say is what seems to be the benchmark that many foil brands are duplicating now. Check out this pumping video :
