flysurfer sonic3, any news?

Postby idan » Thu Apr 11, 2019 9:23 pm

I think it's hard to beat the sonic2, I wonder if the company will be able to improve the Sonic2 without compromising its amazing capabilities...

At the very least if they use their new fabric and implement some of the soul’s features(like longer intakes) and I can see some major improvements in relaunch and airtightness. Hopefully we shall see something soon.

its actually easy to improve on Sonic 2. Sonic 2 is old tech with heavy kite compared current crop of light foils, kite weight matters a lot specially bottom 50% of wind range. Problem FS have is how to position Sonic and Speed in their line-up. I don't see any point continuing with Speed as most people will buy Soul over Speed and it's actually stupid to buy new speeds with prices close to Soul. Sonic can be the freerace option in between Soul and VMG, and in this scenario lighter Sonic with better handling (easy) will be the way to go. Sonic 2 price crashed in second hand market for a reason - if you want racing you go for VMG/R1 or freeride then Soul.

I'm predicting we will see a merge of the Speed 6/Sonic 3 and I'm betting it will be called a Speed. Just too much history with that line of kite to let go. I bet we will see something within the next week or two, along with the new bar and new splitboards.

I can see the Speed turning into a cheaper more user friendly hydorfoil freerace type of foil kite which would set it apart more from the Soul line.

Sonic2 is by no means old tech kite and I wouldn't say it is heavy either. It is high AR high performance kite and my experiences of it are quite positive. Pull is very smooth and it pulls forward, kite also didn't cause me any problems with stability. Improvement from Sonic FR is easily noticeable, because FR had some wingtip tuck problems and not as confident feel in it like Sonic2 has.

If kite shape and performance are kept similar it is not at all easy to make Sonic2 lighter in weight because structure is complex and number of cells (parts) is high. It is not fair to compare kite like Sonic to mid AR kites or even Soul because they are kites of lower specs.

It is true FS kite range is not as clear defined as it perhaps could be. It can be difficult to fit any new kites between Soul and full race kites. Soul is already high performance kite with quite high AR's 5.5 to 6.0 (from 10m upwards), so about same as Speeds used to have. I don''t know how many kiters really need higher performance than Soul has but I don't mind if FS decides to develop Sonic2 (Sonic3/Speed6 ?).

I am expecting the same. I think too that we will see the same "impossible" improvements as from the Speed to the Soul. The Soul has less aspect ratio, easier handling but more performance and especially more windrange and way higher jumping potential as the earlier speed range. I cant wait to put my hands on the new Sonic 3.

I really like the Sonic 2. I don’t race, but I like the high performance for boosting and ripping up wind. However, the Sonic 2 just sucked in wind that was less than optimal. If the stability could be improved without sacrificing the performance, I would buy a couple. I still think I will keep my Souls for snowkiting, but it would be great to have a more stabile Sonic.
