FS Soul 15m or 18m for very lightwind foiling

Postby roninXpl » Mon Apr 29, 2019 2:52 pm

I’m 74kg dry, my biggest foiling wing is Onda.
I’m looking for a kite for the lightest winds, 6-10kt, where the minimum is enough to water relaunch the kite (or have very high chance to do it).

I’ve got Sonic2 13m but sometimes in the lightest wind I struggle to get up on foil at all.

I don’t want to overshot with 18m but on the other hand I want this to be for the lightest wind.

Also, is there a difference in the minimal wind requirement for water relaunch of 15m and 18m Soul?
Would 18m require less or more wind to relaunch from the water?

Hi bud , I’m 86KG and I can get Foiling on my Onda and 12m Soul in the 6-10 Knot wind range no problem.

it’s also relaunch able in these winds .

I am 72 kg, large wing and initially I wanted a 15 m foil as my super light wind kite but Ben at Concept Air convinced me to get a 12 m LW Pulsion. I am glad I took his advice. I am fine in 6 - 10 kts and wouldn't want to be out in any wind that is lighter since below that in my area I have the chance of the wind shutting down completely.

Maybe I should have added that I’ve got AR Ultra II 12m and I’m able to ride when Soul 12m are up but in ca. 6-7kt I’m unable to get up on the foil, once there is a bit of gust and I’m up I can ride with Soul 12m.

The thing is, I already have the Ultra 12m and I do NOT want to get rid of it. Never ever.

Hence my specific question about 15m or 18m.

15m if only for foiling and 18m if you want in using your twintip as well. Mind you the 15 is a beast on the upper side of its windwindow on TT. My Woo records are on that kite(18.7m). Personally though I cring when I see a quiver with that much overlap. Part of the advance of foil kites is needing less of them.

I don't know for sure, but would guess that you can go just as early with the 15 as an 18 with your weight, and it will be way more fun and easier, besides a lot more windrange .

I assume you use 30 meter lines?

If not, you should try that with your 13 m2 and you might be able to save the money for a new kite :D

I weight about 75 kg and have both the 15m and 18m Soul, actually I have all of them. The 15m is a very nice light wind kite but I prefer the 18m when the wind is 7 knots or less. The easy answer is to have both, the 15m is a little more versatile, the 18m is better for very light winds. I can still loop it in light wind with 21m lines for extra help in getting up on the foil.

They will both relaunch about the same, with 6-7 knots it can be a problem. 6 knots a lot tougher than 7 knots. If they just touch and go, not a problem but if they lay in the water and get wet, they weigh more and it is problematic. If you get them back up in the air, they will shed the water quickly and back to having fun.

There have been days where I could not get going with the 15m and switched to the 18m and off I go, you will probably be out in the water all by yourself with an 18m Soul and 6 knots.

I also had to choose between 15 and 18m Soul. But I ride a Slingshot GW111 (front wing 637, rear 420) and need a little bit more speed / power to get flying. I did test the 15m Soul in very light wind. Amazing how solid it is in the lightest wind. Had a fun session but sometimes I just needed this tiny bit of more power. I decided to buy the 18m Soul and for me it was the right decision. I quite the same situation as mentioned I can go flying with the 18m at the lightest breeze.
Considering your 633 I would max go for the 15m.

Soul 15 relaunches with 6 knots NP, less than that and you will struggel a little.
Can ride on a Banga foil No problem with 6 knots of wind.

Got a Soul 12m, on stock lines and on -3m i can get going at 6 kts.. When the 12m flies you can go foiling, I'm glad I didn't take the 15m..
Weight; 70 - 72 kg, prob 77kg with wetsuit and harness.
