Ruben Lenten - My most painful kiteboarding accident (broke my leg)

Postby Toby » Fri May 03, 2019 12:39 pm

Here is a cool video that shows you more about my most painful kitesurfing accident recently in Barcelona. I broke my leg badly with multiple fractures that needed a proper fixing.

In this video I hope to inspire you to remain calm and happy no matter the situation. Dealing with challenges can be hard but I always tell myself, it can always be worse, and start looking at the benefits right away.

It works for me, and perhaps can help you get through your next adversity easier. Thanks for all the support.

If I play it on 25% speed, I don't really see him pushing the quick-release.
Could it be that it wasn't closed perfectly and when the power was big enough, the quick release could open on its own?

The QR looks perfectly closed.

You can clearly see that his hands gets close to the QR when pulling hard. Somehow he must have pulled it up slightly, as you can see in the next picture:

I think whenever he is back and goes for it again, this will be in his head...that can happen anytime again.
I wonder if there is a difference with other QR...maybe the Ozone one opens with less force?

I also had QR open on me...when playing with the board and it hit the QR of the North 5th Element bar.
Plus many times when riding blind...someone something pushed the QR up.

Seeing this, I always hope it doesn't happen at King of the Air...since the heights are just crazy...and if it happens then, the end will be more likely fatal...fingers crossed it will never happen...

https://youtu.be/Twnelmc7bhA?t=88 The Video starts at 1.28, slow it down to 0,25. You can see his hand having contact to the QR, the skin changes from contact. Then focus on the Bar, mainly the little hole where the lines go through, you can see that he starts sheeting out a little and that causes the QR to open since the hand is still in contact with it. At least that's what I see.

He also spoilered that Janek was using ozone gear instead of core, mystic instead of xcel. The crazy guy hopefully got a good deal!

Bloody bad luck :(

The old Peter Lynn Zero7 bar used to pop open like that, the slightest nudge and it was gone. Even had my board float into it once and release...

I dont know this looks really suspect to me . This Ozone chicken loop may have a problem. I looked at the video very carefully and did not see a valid reason why the chicken loop should have opened up . I saw the side of the hand briefly make contact in a normal fashion but this in no way should be enough to open a chicken loop . unless it was not closed properly. Ozone needs to seriously look at this newly designed chicken loop before someone else gets hurt . I had another brands chicken loop that opened under very mysterious circumstances twice a while ago and I decided to get rid off it after that.

Love ozone products, but this product is flawed. Get better Ruben, heal up and charge it again.

All ozone products looks like 10 years ago design, plastic and etc. Sad that Ruben must ride now this not shining brand. In video he dont touch su much release at least. Its was normal move as thousands he did. Something wrongs was with qr, even of he brushed minimum it it cant release and react so sensitive in normal way. I think all ozone lovers must be worried in megaloops with such qr.mecen i this photo you can learly look that make ends around with corners from down to water looking side its bad design idea because megaloopers definitely can touch or brush it suddently with hand or bar, very sharp and to big corners. Their must be only from that side where is arrow.

Also maybe idea to make for megaloopers and bog air jumpes special QR version ?? Which will be impossible to hit so easy and accidentaly. Or do some lock option when he is deciding do megaloops in big heights?
