Minor repairs to carbon wing

Postby MattyM » Mon May 20, 2019 9:34 am

I'm looking for some sort of black epoxy filler in small quantity to fill minor chips in edge of carbon wing - nothing structural, just to tidy things up. I want something that sets quickly and is easy to sand. Something like Solarez, but I want it in black so don't have to paint. What are others using? (I'm in UK so need to purchase from there.)

JB Weld epoxy putty (steelstick) is quick to work with and holds it's shape, and it sands ok if you don't leave it too long.

Just a suggestion, haven't tried this myself, but can't see why it wouldn't work:
How about your own epoxy mix consisting of epoxy with microfibres or other filler mixed in to get the right gel like consistency, and then add a small amount of black graphite powder?

I use epoxy resin for larger repairs. You need to use the right type of pigment or it will stop the resin hardening.

But what I'm taking about here is just tiny chip repairs suited to a quick repair with some sort of single part viscous filler - and black for a good cosmetic finish. I think the stuff in the first comment hardens to dark grey, so not ideal. Shame Solarez don't do black either as this stuff is ideal.

I'm sure someone must have done this! :-)

I did. Laminating epoxy resin, added to that carbon powder that i got from sanding a carbon rod I had available with fine sand paper. So not shavings but rather carbon dust. Became a very discrete repair hard to even spot.

If it's just for tidying things up or smaller repairs I suggest you use a transparent filler. I use this one with good results:
https://www.castrocompositesshop.com/gb ... putty.html

Sets quickly (1 hour maybe) and is is easily sandable (Is use a 600 and then a 1200).

A few of us tried to find an easy reliable answer to minor foil wing repairs,
Tried epoxy putty and it was poor at sticking,
Then we found this JB epoxy filler,
It dries grey, so has to be touched up, but after a while that gets to be tiresome, so I leave mine or if very small then use a black marker pen,
The good thing about this one is it bonds so well, and sands easily with wet and dry paper.
Also I finish the area with my small powered palm buffer using a few dabs of resin polish or T Cut black, which works great,
Resulting in a durable repair.
Palm buffer was £12 new off EBay.

I use the 2-part epoxy resin for my repairs. I mix a small amount of inexpensive graphite (found in the keys & locks section of any hardware store) to bring the color to the proper black. The 2-part epoxy needs to cure overnight but is much stronger than Sol-Rez. I tried quick cure products but they fall out or break.

My method for repairing chunks or damaged wings.

Needed:

West System Six10 thickened epoxy (two part that comes out of a caulking gun in two parts perfectly metered in any quantity you want) Wicked stuff with long shelf life
Small amount of carbon fiber cloth (amazon)
Scissors
Popsicle sticks
Paper cups
Optional Dremel with grinding drum
Wet sand paper. 320, 400, 600, 800, 1500
Glazing compound
Duct tape
Sanding block

How:

Put duct tape on one side of wing tip as platform to put epoxy into place
Cut small bits of carbon fiber to create carbon fuzz
Mix small amount of epoxy and stir the carbon into it well
Should look black and stringy
Put carbon mix onto wing tip and tape backer, Lift tape off surface a bit to get mix onto other side of wing, fold tape over or put another piece over top and shape under tape with gentle squeeze to approximate shape desired
Let harden over night
Remove tape
Grind back carbon to close to desired shape
Finish wet sand with 320 to get final shape, then with finer and finer grits
Fill any pin holes with glaze
Sand again with 1500
Done
Optional black paint and wet sand again.
Probably 2 hours total effort excluding dry time.

Quick technique:

Use JB Weld epoxy pictured above ..which is widely available.
Add a little black graphite powder commonly sold as lock and hinge lubricant (or just file down a pencil lead which is graphite). This blackens the mix.
Fill dings and scrapes and then wait a few hours before wet sanding. I start with 400 grit wet sandpaper.
