Newcomer to Tarifa

Postby durhamj » Tue May 21, 2019 5:57 pm

I am an intermediate to advanced kiter and will be travelling to Tarifa with my family the first week in July. First time there. Looking for advice on kite sizes to take, what is available for board rentals (I am currently focusing on a unidirectional strapless getting my transitions down) and any advice on where to go to get local information on the kite scene.

Bring all sizes you have!

If it blows Poniente (W) you''ll need something bigger than 10m.
Levante (E) is another history... If you're (very) lucky you'll get smooth winds around 25 knots. But be prepared for super gusty and strong conditions (+35kt).

I would avoid Tarifa in July and August because it's overcrowded. I've been in Tarifa a lot of times with just 2 kites 9 and 12 m . When tarifa is nuclear windy 40+ knots just drive 20 km away and you can ride in 18 knots...but you can not do this in summer because kitesurfing is forbidden is those months crowded with beachgoers. So if you don't want to go out of tarifa take a full quiver or better rent what you need.

Check this out: http://hanglos.de/news/347223/world-of- ... arifa.html with Liam Whaley - Big Kite Loops in +35 knots. Levante at Balneario.

You can have this conditions also in July. Poniente is also possible. Anyway it will be overcrowded as flaps1111 already mentioned. :jump:

Check the forecast before you go. That will give you an indication on the wind for the week. Usually when the change between Levante and Poniente you get one flat day. Tarifa is a great place, the vibe, the people although crowded in the summer.

I also suggest to go further east during strong Levante wind. It is just dangerous. And even more so with beginners getting lessons in strong winds....

Find the spots here: https://se.kiteforum.com/spots

Don't forget to bring at least a shorty for riding in Tarifa...it's not warm water.
