South Padre - June/July

Postby Tony in FL » Wed May 22, 2019 6:50 pm

Hi! My girlfriend and I are considering a kiteboarding vacation in South Padre June/July. I’ve reviewed the historical wind data on iKitesurf, along with the current conditions and forecasts. Right now, it looks great but of course the forecast only goes out about a week. The historical data looks reasonable for June/July. Looking for feedback from anyone who has been there – any pros and cons, as well as what kind of wind they experienced (and what month they were there). We are primarily looking for flat water goodness for progression.

I went last June and it was light. We did get a few days, but we missed more than we got. In saying that. The weather was perfect and when we got it, the conditions were really good.

The past few years June and July have been excellent. 80% of the days are over 15mph and its usually 20-25 on the mainland. That is where you will get the best winds in the summer. You usually still have enough wind to foil on the island most any day. Some of our most consistent wind is in June and July.

I'm thinking abot South Padre although I'm mainly wanting waves, I see on swell models where the constant onshore winds build up wind swell. Any advice on wave riding/downwinders, etc.

Agreed with beebad above - reach out to Brett at Prokite. Great group of guys and they can help with whatever you need. In addition to the excellent flat water riding on the flats everything on the island is pretty cheap as compared to other destinations.

The meters on ikitesurf.com are accurate and give a great picture. Do be aware there can be a big difference (10 knots +) between the gulf side and laguna side, especially in summer. Unfortunately for wave riders, the laguna side is stronger as the wind speed accelerates the more inland you go. Spring is the best wave season but you can catch it all year round. A few are on the gulf right now https://www.spadre.com/surfcam.htm. Either stay near the jetty or do a down winder.

Corpus Christi is also great. The down side is the waves are more on shore but the upside is there are more and better inland spots when the gulf is too light.
