A Flock of eFoils

Postby FLandOBX » Mon May 27, 2019 4:29 pm

A couple days ago, I went to my usual hydrofoil spot. On a good day, there may be 2-3 other hydrofoils on the water (along with TTs and windsurfers). When I pulled into the parking lot, I saw 5-6 foilboarders ripping around an anchored boat. It seemed like a lot of foilers on a day when the wind wasn't ideal. It took 15-20 seconds to realize that there were no kites in the air. They were all on efoils. I don't know if it was a demo or school, but they had arrived by boat and, later, left by boat.

Sharing the water with a bunch of efoils is different because wind direction is irrelevant to them. They can turn in any direction at any time, so the orderly flow of wind-powered "vessels" is disrupted a bit. Still, it was pretty cool to watch so many in action at the same time. :D

I saw a video of an efoil demo yesterday it was in OBX and looked recent. That was probably what you saw. At the price these things are selling I doubt they will spread like wildfire!

Yes, that was probably it. And you're right about the price. It's so high that I can't imagine seeing that many efoils together outside of a demo or special event. If the choice is one efoil vs. multiple quivers of kites and boards, well......

Pretty sure prices will come down with bigger volumes.

Looks like a fun tool...and might be on many yachts as fun tool in the future. Like a jetski

I think the tourist market might be kicking in
Like Segways
But as for price. Think what a motocrosser puts out to fund their sport and they only get about an hour of running between fuel stops.
Personally I’d be the sod that kept going out too far and run out of battery
