Jumping fully powered

Postby grigorib » Wed Jun 19, 2019 6:43 pm

In below picture she’s fully powered and the way I boost is usually tied to good amount of trimmer pulled in, leaving full powered situation to meh moments and 10 ft hops when wind is dying.

Wanted to hear others on this topic

My guess, not only does she look better than you, she's a better jumper as well.

🤪

On a slightly more serious note...it all depends on your kite, whether it likes to be fully powered...in other words, can it handle some back stall...it also depends on your bar setup vs here...

What are you thinking about?

It is not that simple...

For one, when light as I believe she is, the kite might be trimmed at pigtails so it rarely backstalls, thats just a fact lightweights prefer a bit less grunt and a tad more depower.

Also, when she jumps, she might be FULLY sheeted out just before takeoff, and then at the photo when in the air, it makes sense to pull the bar in to get max hangtime :naughty:

If you want to land smooth and floaty with speed, you have to depower the kite again, and also fly it forward a lot.

So two things - the essential default trim of the kite is not known.

And, at the apex of the jump, many powers the kite up to achieve max hangtime.

Finally, it looks good in this picture, right :D

I think you are doing it wrong, at least with LEI kites...
Why are you trimming it? Is it because you can't hold your edge anymore with fully powered kite?
If that's the case, then ideally you'd want to jump one-two sizes smaller and boost fully powered..
Most kites fly their best when not trimmed...
With the COREs I usually pull the bar at take off and keep it all the way in until I land..
Now with foils it's a bit different.. but I am guessing that you refer to LEIs since the girl is using high Y core bar, so unlikely that she is on a foil kite...

Anton (can’t spell his family name :D ) has a very good jump tutorial on demand on Vimeo. The best I have come across. Part 2 is on jumping over powered. He proposes not to touch the trimmer at all. It is all in the edging and set up to the jump.

I'm very glad guys don't consider me a sexual object and girls who bite their lips over her body curves don't do guys anyways. So I'm really happy with your first point. I doubt though very much that she can satisfy a lady the way I can, just as a counter note - and that's the point when girls melt away and see you with whole different eyes. So the looks is not everything.

As of jumping better I've seen some girls with balls of steel and I'd happily ride next to any hardrocking girl, or to one in the picture to compete and if I lose I won't feel bitter - I'd probably learn a bit and take points. And that's why I'm curious about her "fully powered" setup

I thought of her lines might be connected to different than "normal" knots and it's impossible to say how high she is, but fully powered kite is a point for me when I can't power it more and that's why I'd rather have mine trimmed for jumping so it's depowered a bit, and therefore full power comes into picture when wind drops.

I also prefer 9m as my jumping wing and I'd rather play with trimmer before switching to 7m or 11m

My line is 5-7-9-11 and 9m is my preferred jumping wing. I'd rather take out trimmed in 9m than fully powered 7m - certainly it gives me an option to power up if wind drops a bit. And if I need to go ride fully powered 9m I'd do it only when forecast is to improve, otherwise I'd take out 11m

I keep kite powered as much as I can hold the edge. That's my logic behind it

I think you making it more complicated by explaining your wind forecast strategy.
Just consider 2 people trying to boost on the same gust in the same spot. One is on fully powered 9 and another is on de-powered 11. Both barelly keeping their edge... My claim is that the person on the 9m is likely to get higher than a person on the 11m (given same skill / experience)
I say "person" to be politically correct! No shame in being beaten by a girl! :D : 8)

Playing around in waves in gusty winds I don't always know what backstall will be trimmed into the bar throw before an off the cuff jump and this probably contributed to variable results particularly during transition jumps. However once I started looking at the kite in the air I was able to control kite flying speed by degree of sheeting. For the trim set up I normally use I usually sheet out a bit before the redirect to get the kite moving and if you are looking at it you can judge how much, if any, sheeting out is required. Helps to know what to expect for next jump as well. Some people I know don't actually see their kite during a jump but looking works for me.

With my small kites l would not have any trim available to me anyway.

That's a great example - for myself I know that 9m is more fun to jump so if wind is sufficient I'd jump on 9 rather than on 11m
However if you put your example - depowered 9m vs. fully powered 7m - I'd rather ride depowered 9m (unless it's fully depowered)

so I guess I'd try to stay on my favorite jumping size as long as I comfortably can and move to larger only if I can't power up more or move to smaller if I can't depower more.

However at the moment of being fully powered on 5m or on 7m or on 9m I'd be tempted to pick a larger size because fully powered now doesn't mean I will still be fully powered 20 minutes later
