304 or 316 SS Hook knife

Postby Bille » Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:18 pm

My Hook knife is old ; i want a new one.

Who makes a Hook knife with marine grade 304 , or 316 SS blades ?
Replaceable would be Great !
I prefer a double blade ; but if it's marine grade SS , i guess a single will do.

I do NOT want a knife made with 440, or the other cheap-crap SS ; it MUST be
the marine grade stuff, or please don't bother replying (.)
I'm going through the Q-power lines ; and a some hook knifes will have trouble with
cutting them.

Anyone has experience buying a cheap-ass knife with the standard box cutter blades, throwing them out and replacing with ceramic blades? May work out cheap and never rust....

440?
440A, B, C, or F?

I've had good experience with the Trilobite knife that uses 440A. I check it and keep it oiled. So far so good!
I like that it's super easy to replace the blades if they start to look questionable.
Now you have me curious to see if there are 304 or 316 blades available that could fit the Trilobite. Sorry for replying, but you weren't totally clear. :thumb:

Austinetic grades like 304 and 316 are too soft for a blade. You need the additional a hardness of martensitic (400) grades to sharpen a knife up and keep it sharp for a while. 440 is a good choice for a blade.

I am using a spyderco salt ladybug in H1 steel, which contains no carbon and will not rust. Unfortunately this doesn’t come as a hook knife, its a folder

All my hook knives have rust, and I can’t sharpen them.

I use the straight blade rather than serrated so I can eventually re-sharpen it. It came very sharp and I have noticed zero corrosion after a month of salt/fresh/humidity exposure.

Please spyderco make me a trilobite with H1

Ditto Trilobite. I wear two of them, one each side of my harness in case I have only one free hand to cut myself loose.

Not a hook knife! Not cheap. The one pictured is about 20 years old and still dangerously sharp. Always carried, rarely used, rinsed and allowed to dry after each session. Top quality Japanese stainless. I cherish this knife it is a corker!

By MYERCHIN, company is still going.

Photo next to a Sharpie pen and in holster on my harness!

Ok dudster --- your the one that convinced me to make a carbon Hook-knife
looking guard , (or hybrid sheath) for a quality knife like yours , to trap my lines
if they ever need cutting -------------again .
Yea , i bin screwed , by shitty hook knives before ; good thing i can hold
my breath, for over a min + ! :(

I am told the RYA did some trials after a spate of dinghy capsize entrapments and they found the best performance was a good pair of scissors. Could not bring myself to carry scissors but we did have them in the rescue boat kit. Just an interesting story!
