Spotz2 foil for beginner?

Hi!
I've found a deal on a spotz2 foil with a 110cm board and 1m mast for under 400usd. Would this work as a beginner setup, or is it too advanced?

For reference I have been kitesurfing a few years on and off.

I had one and several of my friends learned on that model. In it's day it was one of the highest performance foils on the market.
It has a short fuselage and it is quite lively and responsive and provides a very nice ride.

These days beginners often find bigger slower wings and shorter masts easier to learn on at first.. but it is certainly not difficult to learn on a higher performance foil like this and you may enjoy it more after those first sessions. If you are reasonably athletic you will have no problem.. and that's a good price for an all carbon foil with board.

Thanks for the fast response! What do you think about the board ? The owner said it might be too short for a beginner.

Beginners are usually taught on bigger boards so that when they touch down nose first they have a better chance of recovering. So a bigger board is considered easier.

But that looks like a nice board once you get the hang of foiling, so if you are willing to suffer a little while learning it is fine. I hear of people learning on boards smaller than that.

Personally I am not a fan of buying big slow beginner gear and short masts just for the first few hours in the learning process.. you will want better gear once you learn.

Only one thing: Do you want to ride fast, or jump max high, or maybe race?

If so, not in doubt, go for it, you will learn on the Spotz

Assume you want to be fast, since you are considering the Spotz.

As if it is only because it is a really good deal, but you want to freestyle and ride waves, DONT do it, but go directly for one more suited for this and also easier to learn on (bigger wing)...

I bought one with a larger "learner" wing, tried 6 or 7 times, struggled to get deep enough, couldn't get the feel of it, gave up and sold it. I thought foiling might be too hard for me. A year later I Bought an axis foil with a 450mm mast and I was foiling on day one. I wouldn't recommend.

It will be very difficult to learn on that setup. Not to say it can’t be done, but your learning curve will almost certainly be significantly flatter than if you got a slower foil and a bigger board.

The photograph appears to show a leash attached to the board. If that’s what it is, whatever you do, don’t strap that thing to your ankle. If it’s a leash attaching the foil to the board, that’s a good idea. I use one myself.

By today's sissy standards, not the ideal setup for learning but in the past days hundreds of us learned with similar foils . With a little perseverance no reason why you couldn't do the same.

Thanks a lot! I decided to order a SS Fkite setup instead. I think cruising and carving waves will be my primary interest when I eventually get the hang of it anyways. A lot more expensive kit though

Totally doable, but I'd really go over a Spotz2 with a fine tooth comb looking for any cracks or defects in the materials. I have never known someone who owned one who didn't experience some kind of critical structural shenanigans with enough use, and almost all the fast ones ended up fused into one-piece to address some early manufacturing defects. That said, they're really fun foils!!!
