control bar reel ?

Postby bjepson » Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:04 pm

Looking for help...thx! New to kiting and have a "water RE-launchable" Peter Lynn Skim. Live on a small lake and hope to use Skim to pull along an SUP. Very confined beach area to launch kite so cannot launch on land and then get into lake with it. Was hoping to launch in lake from board but the Skim takes on too much water while getting out lines to be able to launch. Someone mentioned to me there might some type of "reel" that attaches to the control bar so that the trainer kite can be launched with much less line and then the balance of the line gradually fed out from the reel. Therefore the kite does not get as wet prior launch. Can anyone help with locating a reel for the control bar area? Thx!

Thanks, but even if drifting on SUP while trying to initially launch, the kite takes in too much water while getting lines out/ready to be light enough to launch off of the lake...

There used to be such a product, very early on in the sport. A reel bar made by the inventor of the Flowbee (hair cut device) could do exactly what you want, but I believe it was pre-depower kites. I remember both lines could be ratcheted in by pushing and pulling the bar, then there was some sort of switch to release them. It was very heavy...
Ran across one at a garage sale event here in San Diego recently.

There was also Cory Roeseler's reel bar that was used with the kite-ski system. Similar in overall function, but even heavier. Also only for two line kites.

Here is a good Thread below. DrLightWind posted a few pictures
of different models (scroll down 5) ; maybe you could come-up with a design
of your own . It would need to accommodate High-Y, and or Low-Y bar
systems ; and a timing devise to correct for line tension would be great !

Agreed. Glad Bille is back, and those "antique" reel bars are awesome. :thumb:
