Lip sun protection?

Postby Peter_Frank » Fri Jul 12, 2019 6:26 am

Hi everyone - sorry if this has been covered but did not find it.

Can anyone share which sun protection works for our lips?

I have found now, that it is a MAJOR problem for a lot more than one would think.

For us living further up north or south, it is a problem when travelling to warmer areas on holidays, and could be a problem for local residents too.

You are in the sun a lot, many hours on and at the water each day, using factor 30 or 50 sun protection and wearing sunglasses as often as possible.
No problems with that :thumb:
But if you use the typical lipstick factor 20-30-50 or whatever, it does not work that well, feels like not at all, as you still end up getting a sunburned lower lip and have to live with the aaaargh consequences for many weeks or months, after you get home :o :x :(

So whats the catch - apart from a facemask which would be unbearable to use, which lip sun protections are really durable and effective for watersports?
AND, okay to use regularly for normal use also, every surfday, as I know many zink products are not usable for lips, only for the harder skin.

Many girls recommend this or that when asked here locally, but no offense, I doubt it is much more than those many of us have used that are NOT sufficient.

Experiences, please share as a common problem for many :D

Are you using enough lipstick? You have to use as much until your lips start looking white.
A very thick layer.

I use sunblock :D

The stuff we have here is more like a liquid than a cream, so it goes on lips fine. When we go home for summer, I take several bottles.

Those lipsticks are the worst thing in the world, only dries up the lips. At least that's the case for me. I am using zinc and have no problems with that at all even tho I have neurodermatitis since forever.

It’s nice to realize that I’m not alone dealing with ruined lower lip :)
Sunburnt and sore lip was my major and very painful problem to deal with, especially on extended trips.

Below works magic for me

I carry a stick of 60 lip sunblock in a small hook knife pouch on my harness and reapply hourly

YEA --- Me also ! :(

I Like the product you posted ; will give it a try !! :thumb:
Yours is a bit stronger than the one i use ; which is :

Banana Boat Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 45, Aloe Vera & Vitamin E, 0.15 Oz
water resistant up to 80-min also.

I could use an ALOE Vera based lip Balm of 15-SPF , for (winter) ; if
anyone knows of one ? Trader-Joe's use to have one , but quit
selling it.

I like this:

Also use it to coat heavily my nose and the skin around my eyes not covered by sunglasses.

The best one I've found has been good old Chapstick Sun Defense.

Tried expensive Burts Bees and Sun Bum, both didn't seem to protect very well.

I used to buy the fancy zinc sticks but realised you can buy zinc cream from the pharmacy for less than half the price I put it on thick so my lips are totally white and then reapply after a good few crashes.

If I was busy teaching a lot and the weather was really intense I would wear a uv block Buff Scarf and that would keep my lips from getting burnt.

Most the instructors just used these scarves all the time instead of constantly applying the zinc
