Strapless jumps, backrols...

Postby jaros » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:48 am

Any suggestions how to start strapless jumps on a hydrofoil? What to practice first? What not? I am talking about small jumps, with the foil just above the water, not some huge airborn suicider... Thanx! :thumb:

get some speed, try to raise your kite up like you would for a foot switch but not all the way up to 12 and simultaneously try to push the front of the board a bit down and than kick it back up kinda like an skateboard ollie (at the kick the kite should be high). Land the board and do a litte dive to keep the momentum forward. Try to find a nice flat water surface spot for the first tries, that makes the first landings a lot easier.

It is a really fun and cool move to get seaweed of the foil for strapless riding.

Backrolls take a lot, but learn the straight jump first, then add height, then add the grab...

There is a ketos video where Stephan goes over the regular strapless jump on vimeo

Is small wing or big wing a better choice for practice? Especially in the landing phase! Also how much kite power and lift?

Small wing will get you higher for sure, large wing works just as well

Use whatever wing your comfortable in, personally I use a surf foil and throw a back roll off a wave, maybe 3-5 feet, just fun, not going for height but connecting waves, i foil a 71cm mast

But if I lived in a flat spot I would have a 90-100cm mast with a small wing...going for height

Kite size is tricky, I use to use the smallest kite before, now I’m foiling 2m sizes bigger

Where I’m powered on the foil, there’s times now if I just wanted to ride a wave on the foil I could be on a 6m but I will still be on the 10m just cause I’ve gotten so use to being lit
