Helmet w metal face guard

Postby dogspring55 » Fri Aug 09, 2019 1:08 pm

I'm learning to foil and have had the board head straight for my face twice.
I now make sure I fall with my arms and hands protecting my face.
I've read some posts (and watched the Moses video) about how to fall and will work on that as I'm
getting lots of practice :D

A friend who is also learning to foil uses a helmet with a metal face guard;
he also uses it while learning new tricks on the kite. The guard is just
enough to protect his face but not enough to obstruct his visibility.
He's had it for years and we can't find anything like it.

The only thing our local sporting stores carry is batting helmets;
the visor seems like it would block visibility of the kite when giving
it a quick glance, and of course not hold up well in salt water.
I've found some European companies for kayak paddling (someone had
mentioned in another post) but nothing in the US.

I'm wondering if anyone has purchased a helmet with a metal face guard
and where you purchased it? Anything in US? And anything to consider?

I'm female with a fairly small head :-D.

Thanks in advance

There is a kiter at my beach who uses a Bauer style ice-hockey helmet with the mesh grill. If you're in the US, probably a good chance to get one on Craigslist.

paintball "anti fog" masks might be worth investigating
i used a few times for sun protection (works...but the wind noise is annoying)

positive: cheap..easy to buy (amazon) and a huge variety of styles/choices....and drains (well enough)

For me, kite foiling didn't cause much worry, as you can fall away from it, pulled by kite. Surf foil was the scary one. I figure even a football style one would be enough to block it. However that stage will pass quick so you may find it isn't necessary

I used one while learning and I didnt give a fck what anyone thought about it. Did I need it? - probably not but there is a risk of getting smashed in the face by the foil especially in the early stages when you are likely to totally lose control of things. Visibility is pretty much the same as with something like a Gath helmet and you dont really notice the metal cage. Feels a bit like kitesurfing with a suit of armour on - designed for impacts in ice hockey. The helmet will rust a bit if you use it in salt water but other than that is fine for kitesurf use and can be secured firmly with the straps, it will not fall off even if you have a major wipe out.

Thanks!! I'll check it out. Definitely looks protective. Been on the water enough years, I know things can go bad quickly.

Thanks. Since football season starting soon, I'd fit right in...might just look like I took a wrong turn to the field. :D
I hope to get more time on the water soon to get more control, just at the point where I'm still wobbly and not in control at times.
