How likely am I to break a Apple series 3 watch?

Postby leeuwen » Mon Aug 26, 2019 12:54 pm

Hi,
Heading out for a kite holiday soon and I am considering buying an Apple Series 3 watch just for tracking my (woo 3) jumps.
Since it will be pretty hot I plan to go out with a shortie.

I read some people put the watch under their wetsuits without much issues but that sorta defeats the purpose of seeing how high you jump.
Any experience / recommendations with the watch "out in the open"?
E.g. should I get some specific case?

Thx!

Hé Leeuwen,

The Apple watch 3 works perfectly with the Woo3 and also without a long wetsuite of course.
Just to be sure I use a sports loop band instead of the standard like this one; https://www.watchbandjes-shop.nl/sport- ... icht-grijs
It works with velcro and never gets rid of your wrist easily.

Why not just wait until after the session to see what you hit?

Knowing the real time height of your jumps won't make you go any higher it will just distract you from enjoying the session?

Just an idea :)

Thx Leon,

I will go ahead and get one and a sportbandje ;)

Regarding not waiting: having a woo also does not make you jump higher but it is fun.
Having the info in the water might help a (very small) bit it in figuring out what technique works better but it is mostly for the fun for me.
I do not think it will distract much: you have plenty of time to look 5 seconds at the watch between jumps.

I recommend waterproof classification at 20 ATM (200m) for watersports. I have destroyed 2 watches that where classfied at 10 ATM (100m). The thing is that the classification does not factor in the instant extreme water pressure happening in a crash. You have to have 20 ATM or protect it under the wetsuit.

I broke mine within the first month.. but not on the water..
I was changing and took it off, putting on a bumper of my SUV. The wind blew it off and it hit the pavement from 2ft height.
holy crap! The front glass got 10 million cracks, making it immediately unusable.
I now use $5 chinese watch to keep track of time and it keeps taking all the abuse you can think off..
The woo app for iwatch never really worked well anyways, but maybe they finally fixed it?

I have kited with the Nike band on my Series 3 for two years, many times without a wetsuit and in salt and fresh water. Not a single issue. Not sure you need the sport loop.

I've used the Catalyst case with my series 4 watch when in shortie. It's a bit bulky so I've now taken that off as I am no longer in shorty country  and keep the watch under my wetsuit which I think is okay.
