Yes, it is very dangerous.I went about 5 years ago, got infected with a very dangerous virus( streptokyte and boardcocos ) and from then on I retired from work, came to live in Prea and couldnt get rid of this disease.
Seriously, has the same problems of any developing country, dont leave your equipment unattended on the beach and have fun.

Lots of nice places to stay... The closer to the center the better...pretty save these days.
Just don't play hot shot.

Several nice restaurants, once here ask other guests at the place you stay for recommendations.

ATM and money exchange in the center.

Some day trips or downwinders recommended to see more spots along the coast line.

See you here !

Yes, some nasty stories around...but most of them did some things you shouldn’t do.

Eg:
Go where people are.
Stay away from drugs and prostitution.
Don’t show off.
Use an old phone if you need one on you.
Best to wear no watch.
Don’t leave gear on the beach or car unattended.
Don’t make enemies.

Pay attention to this and you will have the kite trip of your life.

And things also improved since the new president is in power.

Please note: most killings are within the drug scene or revenges. Normal people are very rare to be killed.

I have been living in Prea for about 5 years, heard of some equipment being taken for being unattended on the beach, 3 or 4 cases of cars being broken and stealing equipment and maybe a few instances of houses having equipment stolen. This in 5 years, from Fortaleza to Jeri.
Never heard of physical violence against tourists( excluding fights about girls in night clubs).
Have seen and heard of murders drug related ( dealers killing people that didnt pay them).
What you should really worry is about traffic, cars and bikes dont respect people walking, be on the defensive side.
Now, for the fun factor, wind is going to be there for sure, no chance of being skunked, lots of places to kite and if you go to the ocean few people on your way, marvelous downwinders, you can go 3/400 km north-west, warm waters, I have never been stung by jelly fish, never heard of shark attacks, people tend to be warm and nice and prices are good.
Hope you enjoy and “ survive”.
Have fun

yes, state robs you big time...when driving a car, make sure to have passport and drivers license with you...and pay attention to all signs and speed limits...so many cameras to detect red lights, speed, seat belt, mobile phone, bus lanes and wrong turns...it is ridiculous. Most of them in Fortaleza though.
