edit: or is that picture very misleading - is it just the metal bit for 30usd or the whole mechanism?
The picture is misleading - it is only the chicken loop replacement for $30 (not the entire quick release).
What size rings are folks using? I ordered a 21 last week (will take a while to get here).

Perhaps I'm missed the start of this topic, but I just put the chicken loop around the rope. Works fine. What is the problem? Wouldn't the RE bar come with a slider if they thought it would be needed?

friction is the issue. The CL is not designed for so much friction.

I have tried 3 or 4 different rings for my rope spreader bar and after 4 years I think the best is the "Antal" ring.
Almost never (1 in a 100 crash) comes out out from under the CL and if so, it's easy to pop it back on the go.
I guess getting the right size is important...
I use the one on the photo with the standard Fone CL
cheers

This is what I use. It is a 6mm stainless steel shackle onto which is welded a 25mm x 5mm stainless steel round ring. The wheel is the same as the original Jaystore Dynabar pulley wheel. Any size ring could be welded onto the shackle but I find 25mm (1") works fine. Virtually no rope wear of course.

I am not seeing any rings that measure "20 X 14" on the below link. Maybe I am missing something?

I think you are looking at a low friction ring from a different brand...
In terms of quality, I'm sure it will be fine, but they might not carry the same size as the Antal brand.
The 20x14mm fits the Fone CL perfectly, but if you ride with another tipe, I would suggest, to walk into a marine shop with your kite bar and try the ring first.
here is a site that list the Antal ring, look around the web for a shop near you...
