I was playing tennis last night and some unlucky guy on another court severed off his ring finger. He was going for a ball, and reached out his hand into a chain link fence while losing his balance and falling. The ring got caught in the fence and pulled off his finger at the second knuckle. He was taken to the ED and then the hospital sent EMS guys back to the tennis center to search for the guy’s finger behind the fence so the surgeon could try to reattach. The injury is called a ring avulsion and apparently isn’t that uncommon.
Since I never take off my ring when doing various sports including k-surf, it got me thinking about potential danger. Has anyone heard of ring avulsion during kiting? It seems pretty unlikely that a ring could get caught on a round kitebar.

You have to be unlucky for a ring avulsion.
But as you said, it is not rare.
There’s plenty of bad luck out there.
I would never wear a ring while doing sports.
Many ring injuries happen when the ring is squeezed too tight onto the finger, which can happen in an infinite number of ways.
Crush the ring onto the finger until circulation is lost, they will have to cut it off.
Get there quick and “it” refers to the ring. A little too late and “it” is the finger.
This can happen easily, whether the finger is gripping a kite bar, bike handlebar, ski pole etc.
All it takes is a bad fall.
Sometimes in a scenario as OP describes the victim is luckier and only loses the skin covering the finger. Which may heal and remain attached. Or not.
But as you said, it is not rare.

Wearing rings is obviously a personal choice. Although I have not heard of any cases in kitesurfing I have known rings to be hung up on unexpected things like window latches, rugs, lorry beds......
Personally I am not greatly influenced by culture or fashion and you would have to pay me a decent wad of cash to wear a ring at any time. To me they are just an unnecessary risk!

Having seen a finger degloving (don't Google if squeamish!) first hand (not from kiting) I religiously take off my wedding ring before I go in the water! It's a horrific injury and if it happened to me I would be out of work for a long time!

Ha ha Toby - the topic is ring avulsion not ring aversion. I got lucky with my wife. In 14 yrs of marriage she hasn’t ever told me not go kiting if it’s windy and always watches the kids so I can go.
