is it that easy to splice my own lines, SK99 600kg or-

Postby Foil » Thu Sep 19, 2019 11:49 am

should I send it away to Slav in Ireland to sort for me.
I need to shorten my new ozone (SK99 spec) 23mtr lines to around 19mtr.
and then splice the cut lengths as extensions, thats 8 splice jobs to tackle :o
I am now jumping with good power from large foil kites on my foilboard so no strength loss will be most desirable.

has anyone here learned this dark art?
is it easy to learn?
tools needed from where?
Tips on what to avoid and best to try.
best vid to watch?

very nervous about cutting up my nice new lines :-?

but its a new skill to learn, so should i just stop worrying and get on with it.
give me any sort of engineering task and I am in my element, but needle and threads, yikes!

Its quite easy no biggy

Look at gunnar brummel splice video - thats all you need.

Also i have no special tool just wire /different diameter/ for different lines.
Stainless wire is better as it is stiffer and easier to work with. I found wire much better than guitar string. With brummel there is no sewing.

and of course practice with some old line first

Yes it is very easy.
The tool used by Gunnar is called a D-Splicer, I use it too.
You should make the inside line thinner, take a look here:

I usually will attached spliced line directly to the control bar but at the kite end I won't attach them directly but create pigtails for the kite end (or buy them either way) because attaching and detaching spliced loops creates a lot of wear.

D splicing tool is now on its way, £17 delivered.
watched both the videos above and checked the size of D splicer needed for 2-3mm line.
gunnar recommends 50 times the line diameter for the length of the buried line which is good to know,
and the line thinning recommendation is interesting, as the bump mentioned as a weak point, I have seen this on other spliced ends that have not been thinned out to a fine taper.
mine will be tapered for sure.
cheers guys.

yes that's what I am doing,
also it allows you to add and remove extensions easily.
