Race foil on pocket foil board? (Moses 637)

Postby joekitetime » Fri Aug 30, 2019 3:06 pm

I was told it won't work (by one person) but am still curious...

My questions is this: how hard is it to ride a Moses 637 on a Dwarf Craft 3'6" (or similar pocket board)?

I was told that one would need a board to get you up to speed before you could get on a foil, unless you had insane kite power.

I've been working towards faster and faster foils. Still riding my 633 mostly (among the big wings I've got 873/790/683 but mix them up just to change things). And I've started riding the 590 more although it has taken awhile to get dialed (mast all the way forward from all the way back, essentially) and moving the front strap back 2 positions).

And, I've read that I'll need to move the back foot even further back for the 637 Moses race wing which will be tough being that I've run out of room already.

But, still, I'd like to confirm if it is just silly/stupid to go much beyond the 590 wing for a pocket board, or if there is some potential.

I was told it is silly stupid to ride the 873 which is a huge sup wing but frankly frank I really like it and it is super fun for mega glide when you are in the mood. So why not the 637 as well (race wing). Why not go speed around like crazy, just for some fun?

Any thoughts are appreciated. I feel like I need to log more hours on the 590 before I start attempting the race wing(s) and getting them dialed...

i've been wanting to do the exact same thing...although you are a step a 2 ahead of me.

i waiting on a deep tuttle plate adapter to use my fastest foil use on a 33" pro macho board.
...just to try it.

whenever i can source a moses 900 wing (the havok wing for windsurf)... my lightweight travel quiver woube be those 2 wings(790 and 900) on same board, mast and fuselage.

I strongly believe 900 wing wouldn’t fit surf fuselage but only 680/647 kite fuselages (besides 1100 windsurf fuselage)

Your better option would be 790 and 720 wings for surf fuselage

I need to be travelling above 20kph/10 knots before starting to fly on my Levitaz Bionic and even then it is only just enough, faster is easier. I wonder if a small pocket board can get up enough speed on the surface to make take off possible. I also have a wide stance when using the race foil, much wider than a pocket board would allow.

Hi, yes it is possible but the smaller wing and board are the harder it will be until it can go over the personal skill limit and will no more be rideable. And on top the lowend can start to be realy worse if as said combining both small.

I have used "Queen Lily" with 88 x 33 cm and much less downside surface a few times with a 580 cm² freerace wing, as mono and also with a small stabi. Even in no waves it is pretty much impossible to start it gliding on the deck, but for the start you have to bomb yourself out of the water and in the same movement up to the minimum riding speed of about 20 km/h or more for a race foil. This is possible, but pretty special. I often do it by backstalling my race foil kite down to the surface and then let it accelerate crossing the whole wind window ... to use loops can be more difficult for start.

If it ones flys you can also touch down a bit at higher speeds, but I would recommend to test yourself if you like that. As you have seen yourself 633 has few to do with with 590 and with this one it will be similar to go to a race wing. If your jibes and tacks on the 590 are not perfect yet, I would recommend to wait for that. Every new start with a difficult combo will consume a lot of energy and concentration, so falling in every secound tack is not an option.

i actually do have an old 680 fuselage (and a 790 already...while a keeper...it isnt the fastest wing in the land)

but your point remains.
the whole point of the 900 to me...was not needing to pack that extra aluminum bar.
bummer.

So get the 720 wing. It’s the fastest wing you can mount on surf fuselage and it is smaller than 900 too

I have a similar question... I'm looking at using a Moses Vorace GT (W588 wing) on a Groove Skate L board(130cm). I understand that this wing isn't quite as fast as the 637, but will I have similar issues getting up to speed on a non-race style board?

Hi Dave1986-
I still haven't gotten this far in my experimentation. However, a friend (let's just say his name is Wayne. Well, that is because that is his name!) Rides a groove skate. He rides the Moses 590 wing and the 637 wing on his groove skate. I have photos of his marks as to where to marked the mast position. Oddly (to me), he runs the 637 further back (looks like about 2"!) than the 590. I would have guessed it would have been the opposite. If I knew how to post photos here I would but I haven't had luck yet.

So, to answer your question, yes, he can ride it.

Aside note - he is a great foiler. He jumps, does some weird air tacks, does flying tacks and 360s, and is someone I try to learn from.
