The "golf bag" is hit or miss with United. I've done it about 10 times and made it free 8 and the other 2 were $250 each way. Ouch! It seems its the mood of the gate agent. Lately I bring kites and rent a board unless it's a long stay and worth the risk. I might try this flight in January too.

Usually I take AF through CDG which is easy and they seem to go for the golf bag trick. Maybe fewer french golfers so they don't know this is a ridiculous size for golf clubs.

My understanding is that Lufthansa got quite expensive all of a sudden for kite gear.

If you are coming to Cape Town and want to rent kitesurf gear, we intend to have the following to rent this year (all Duotone, our rental partner):
Neos: 7, 8 & 9 (this year's - 2019/20)
Evos 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10) (this year's - 2019/20)
New bars in various line lengths
Vegas: 8 & 10 (2017 / 18) and wakestyle bar
Twin tips: X-Ride 135 & 138
Directionals: Wam and Pro Wam

Cheers

LOL I was flying back from Fortaleza Brasil two weeks ago. My travel buddy had a "golf bag". The checkin agent smiled and winked at him and said "kites?" It got on fine, but he wasn't fooled.

If you go to the United website it is very clear. You are allowed 1 kiteboard as a normal bag fee. If it is oversized or overweight, then you pay for oversized baggage. If you are taking a twintip, it should be charged as a normal piece of baggage. If a single surfboard should be close to normal baggage. Just weight and measure your bags before you go and you are good.

Typically I can fit my twintip, 2 kites, 1 bar and a harness in a single bag that is not oversized and weighs less than 50 lbs.

FYI, I fly approximately 100 times / year on United and do not have issues. Know the rules when you are at the checkin and you won't be overcharged.
