Duotone surfboard fins

Postby Bill » Mon Oct 07, 2019 8:56 am

Their fins do not appear compatible with fcs or futures. So when a fin breaks you are stuck unless there's a duotone shop nearby! Which could be a real pain! Has anyone worked out how the fin boxes could be made compatible?

Why do duotone do this, other than to fleece their customers with expensive fins.

Cheers

Well, they are actually compatible with futures as Sky states in this video at 50 sec.

Same fin box as Cabrinha ,IMO they do this for :
1. Reduce costs of an original finbox from Futures / FCS2
2. Easier and cheaper board Construction/ laminating
3. Get rid of customers claims about fin/box lateral tolerances when using cheap futures finbox copys ...two lateral screws get fins tight at the box and problem solved...
The reality is that original future fins are not designed to be screwed lateraly due to the weight saver voids at its base ...
There's 3 options :
1. Fill the voids of the future fins base with hard epoxy putty
2. Go with FCS and lack performance of the fins from a semi-empty finbox
3. Do like me and avoid buying boards without original Future / FCS 2 fin boxes....

well I've got a duotone board and also some futures fins and they are NOT compatible.

The base on the north fins is 4mm deeper than the futures (so you get a big "hole" when fitting the futures).

Futures are designed to be screwed on the front. Duotone from the side. The problem with that is that most futures fins have indentations in the side of the base or even cut-outs, meaning the screws on the duotone fin box will not engage properly.

So you are "screwed" and have to buy expensive overpriced duotone fins
